Your hike along the creek in the forest is interrupted by a terrifying scream. You look over the water at a huge, old rotting log. Suddenly, a creature leaps up onto the log and glares at you. Covered in white fur, it's unlike anything you've ever seen before. Meet the White Thang. The White Thang (yes, "Thang") is a cryptid of middle Alabama. Sightings of the White Thang go back to the 1930s in the Birmingham area. Descriptions vary from a lion/dog mix on four legs, to a white sasquatch, to a kangaroo-like animal, but all agree on the white fur and screams (like a woman or baby) that it makes. Electroplating factory. Historical artwork of the Elkingtons' electroplating factory in Birmingham, England. In 1840, George Richards Elkington (1801- 1865), with his cousin Henry, patented the new potassium cyanide electroplating method of John Wright. They are generally credited with inventing the first successful electroplating process. The Elkington cousins used gold and silver to plate a wide range of metal objects, from spectacle frames to pen nibs. Using their new technique, they came to dominate the plating industry. Electroplating uses an electric current to deposit metal ions from solution as a layer on the metal object to be plated.

Vintage Gadsden, AL

Mrs. Francis Edwards was a bookkeeper for a freight company in Birmingham who handled collections. After having to wait at the same trucking company each week, she told the owner that she should just buy the business so that it could be run properly. To her surprise, the owner called and asked if she was interested. Turns out, she was and in January 1946, she was president of her own trucking company. Starting with 10 trucks that came with the business, she positioned Eagle Motor Lines as a specialty carrier focused primarily on flatbed work. 20 years later, Eagle Motor Lines had 340 trucks and over 500 trailers, operating across nearly half of the USA with annual revenue approaching $20 million. Not bad for a bookkeeper, huh?
