The story of Bournemouth Pier begins in December 1847, when it was proposed that a company be formed to raise the £2,000 needed to fund the construction of a new pier. The initial scheme fell through due to lack of finance, and so it was decided to build a small jetty instead. The jetty was opened in 1856, but was damaged by a storm in August of that same year and had to be demolished. In 1859, a 1,000 foot (over 300 metres) long wooden pier was designed, and this structure was completed and officially opened in September 1861 at a cost of £3418. Some might say that this shot is a little too 'busy', and the daffodils are definitely past their best, but the tulips, palms and buildings in the background make for an interesting composition and mix of colours, so here goes... A Grand Day Out Number of views as of 3rd June 2017 = 530. The Grand Cinema Theatre in Westbourne, Bournemouth opened its doors on 18th December 1922 with a production of "Anthony and Cleopatra" performed on the stage. The following day, it screened its first film "A Prince of Lovers". The auditorium, complete with orchestra pit, had quite a unique feature, a sliding roof which could be opened in hot summer weather! The entrance was also topped by a revolving globe, which was illuminated at night. Initially an independent cinema, it was taken over by Savoy Cinemas and became part of the original Associated British Cinemas(ABC) circuit. Water Tower, Bournemouth Number of views as of 10th April 2018 = 570. This former water tower (built in 1883) can be found in the Upper Gardens in Bournemouth, Dorset, England. It is now home to a colony of bats. The Gardens come to life in springtime with a variety of flowering plants and shrubs. First out this year were this cluster of crocuses. Date: 8th March 2011.
