A digital art image of the canal basin at Brecon in Powys, South Wales. Here the Monmouth and Brecon Canal reaches its northernmost limit after winding through the Brecon Beacons. The canal was constructed to link Brecon with the docks at Newport, the narrow boats carrying coal, iron and limestone. A system of tramways linked the canal to the mines and quarries. It is currently navigable between Brecon and Pontymoile, with plans in place to extend this to Newport.

The Kennet and Avon Canal, 87 miles long, was constructed between 1794 and 1810 to link the Kennet and Avon rivers and thus provide a smooth transport link between Bristol and London via Reading and the Thames. It fell into disuse due to the switch to rail transport and the rise of the Great Western Railway which runs alongside the canal here. Further on, through the swing bridge at West Mills the waterway glides through the middle of the town to head eastwards to Reading and the River Thames. The was built between 1794 and 1810 to enable goods to be smoothly transported between Bristol and London.

Bridge 166 crossing the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal as it leaves the basin in Brecon, South Wales. Dating from the early 1800s the canal was constructed to transport coal and iron to Newport. It also joined with a system of tramways linking mines and quarries to the waterway. It winds its way through the Brecon Beacons, largely following the contours of the mountains as it tracks the course of the River Usk. It is currently navigable to Pontnewydd and plans are in place to extend this.

This area, West Mills, was once a hive of activity where wool and woollen products were loaded and unloaded to and from canal boats to be transported to London via the Thames at Reading or to Bristol and its docks to be exported abroad. Now warehouses and workshops have been reaplaced by or converted into flats and houses and the boats are for leisure.

This section of the canal - or navigation (combined river and canal) began its construction in 1718 under the supervision of engineer John Hore of Newbury and in 1724 the section between Reading and Newbury was opened. The remainder of the length to Bristol was completed between 1794 and 1810. The canal fell into disuse due to the coming of the railway but was restored and fully reopened in 1990.

Pensarn Cottage near Newport on the Crumlin branch of the Monmouthshire, Brecon and Abergavenny Canal. This cottage is situated just below Lock 13 of the Fourteen Locks flight at the point where the towpath changes sides. This arm of the canal was opened in 1799, the flights of locks being a major feat of engineering. Here the canal is at present unrestored and is awash with wild flowers and grasses but work has started on making this a working waterway again.

Here we find narrowboats and other canal craft moored along the banks. Continued walking in this direction will eventually take us to the Thames at Reading.

The Kennet and Avon Canal as it makes its way westwards out of Newbury in West Berkshire. Here it joins with the River Kennet which at one time provided the water to power the corn and woollen mills along here. Newbury was renowned for its woollen industry and just ahead here is a row of weavers' cottages from the earlier days of cottage industry. The canal was used to transport wool, woollen goods as well as other commodities east to London via the Thames or west to Bath and Bristol.
