On Candlemas Day, February 2, followers of Jesus celebrate his Presentation at the Temple and the Virgin Mary being purified, with many of the faithful bringing candles to their churches to be blessed. Thereafter (in Poland, for example, where they’re lit and placed in windows to ward off storms), the candles represent Jesus and the day of his induction into Judaism, and they go toward explaining the name of the holy day, Candlemas.

In France and Belgium, crêpes are traditionally served on Candlemas (La Chandeleur), February 2. This day was originally Virgin Mary's Blessing Day but became known in France as "Le Jour des Crêpes" (literally translated "The Day of the Crêpes", and sometimes called colloquially as "Avec Crêpe Day", "National Crêpe Day", or "day of the Crêpe"), referring to the tradition of offering crêpes. The Celtic goddess Brighid. On the first of February, the Irish celebrate this goddess (or her Christianized version, Saint Brigid) on Brigid's Day. The pagans celebrate them, Imbolc. I have always loved this figure and its symbols. Perhaps it is partly because of the symbolism of the candles and the light that brings her closer to Lucia and Hekate: light in the darkness, inner light etc. ?️ For Brighid is the Celtic goddess of the Forge, poetry, medicine, crafts, sacred wells and cattle. She is the patroness of our Inner Fire (vitality, creativity); of our Air (expression, inspiration); of Water (body fluids) and Earth (medicinal plants, construction, pugnacity).

3 March 2011 Lancashire NW England The same hedge bottom where these are located has snowdrops in flower much earlier this year - since 7 January. Are they wild? Snowdrops don't colonise by seeding except possibly in very mild conditions and so it is more likely that they were planted as bulbs at some point along this particular hedge bottom, beside a farm track, where they have been left to do their own thing. Their blooms should not be taken indoors, as it is said to bring bad luck and have been described as a 'Corpse in its shroud' An old wives tale? I don't know, but won't be tempting fate.
