This is a largely dry area - very hot in the summer and cold in the winter but with little rain so it tends to be rather arid. This was the land of the feared Hittites in ancient history before the coming of the Greeks and thewn the Romans.It became Turkish in the late C11th. Camera: Canon EOS 1Ds Mark III Uchisar is one of the most famous villages of Cappadocia, and one of the best places to have as a "base" while exploring this magnificent region, along with Goreme and Urgup. Uchisar means "edge castle" , and its famous for that castle, which is not a castle like we know it with walls and doors etc. It's a very tall volcanic rock, with holes and tunnels, a natural castle that was used like one, since the Byzantine years (there is one more similar village in Cappadocia, called Ortahisar, which I think means "Middle castle"). You can reach the top of the rock crossing tunnels, caves and carved stairs. It is the highest poing in the heart of Cappadocia, offering some magnificent views, especially to Pigeo...

Photo taken during my flight with a hot air baloon over the unbelievable landscape of Cappadocia . A unique experience, although quite expensive. A unique feeling, like flying and floating at the same time, defying gravity, a feeling of freedom! You'll have to wake very early in the morning to catch the flight, around 04:30, but I repeat, it's worth the trouble and the money. The Ihlara Valley, is located on the southwest corner of the imaginary triangle that forms Cappadocia, but quite far from its "heart", which is around Goreme town. Uchisar Castle located just outside of Goreme, in Cappadocia; Turkey. The ancient hollowed out rock turned castle is the highest point in Cappadocia and the most unique looking piece of semi natural architecture I have ever seen. Canon 50D Canon 55mm-250mm

About the "philosofical" question of the title: It seems that it's a subject troubling more the gentlemen than the ladies, because it seems that ladies already know the answer!

Hot air balloons and the landscape catching the rising sun as it enters the Valley of Love, so called due to its phallic shaped Fairy Chimneys or pinnacles. Goreme Valley, Cappadocia, Turkey, Asia Minor. The pinnacles are the result of erosion of volcanic deposits that occurred thousands of years ago. The softer material is eroded more quickly and the harder tufa remains in many shapes. Where the tops are made of a hard rock, the pillars seem to have hats on top. Canon 500D, zoom lens. A view of some of the amazing rock formations in the National Park at Goreme in Cappadocia, Turkey. These natural pinnacles of volcanic rock have been shaped by erosion alone. Among these are carved stone dwellings and tunnels which were created many centuries ago - as a means of escape from marauding invaders. Also carved into the rock are ancient churches complete with frescoes.

*Best viewed in large format* This is the second of a few pieces I'll be uploading that were captured from a hot air balloon, drifting over Cappadocia, Turkey. A ride in one of these balloons has been on my 'things to do before I die' list for a long time. I really can't think of a better place to experience it than Cappadocia. The volcanic land forms are unique and almost alien to this planet. Staying here for a few days was one of the many highlights of my recent trip to Europe. A flight with a balloon above the spectacular landscape of Cappadokia (Turkey) is considered a "must do" once you visit the region, and if you ask me, it really is. The whole thing, waking up in the middle of the night, watch the preparations of the baloon, and mostly, flying (the "main course") are an unforgetable experience. There are many companies arranging flights and if the weather allows it, you can see more than 30 baloons in the Cappadocian sky. The take off place varies and it depends on the wind direction. Some very experienced pilots can fly "through" the rocks, as you can see in the photo.
