The Mallard or wild duck

The female mallard is a mottled brownish color and has a violet speculum bordered by black and white. The crown of the head is dark brown with a dark brown stripe running through the eye. The remainder of the head is lighter brown than the upper body. The bill is orange splotched with brown, and the legs and feet are orange. Thank you for looking at my Photography!!! Cynthia

The female Blue-winged Teal is not quite as distinctive as the male which is easily identifiable with its bold white cresent in front of the eye. The female only has a small white patch between lower eye and bill but does have a dark eyeline, white eyering and a large dark bill. The powdery blue shoulder patch is visible in flight. They breed in much of the northern USA and Canada migrating as far south as South America. But many are perfectly fine to stop in south Texas for the winter. The powdery blue shoulder patch is visible in flight along with green secondaries of the wing. They breed in much of the northern USA and Canada migrating as far south as South America. But many are perfectly fine to stop in south Texas for the winter.
