In Holbein's work, Death is still very aggressive; however, it does not dance with the deads anymore, but intervenes directly in scenes of everyday life. Paris' dance of death had dominated the genre in the late Middle-Ages; from 1538 on, the work of Holbein became the ultimate reference.
