Popularly known as foxglove, digitalis is the source of the cardiac glycoside digitalis. Described in the English literature in 1785 by William Withering (the tale is that an old maid of Shropshire knew a cure for dropsy, or edema -- one finding in heart failure), digitalis has been used in the treatment of cardiac diseases since. Its use has declined as the therapeutic window (the range between a therapeutic response and toxicity) is quite narrow. In my early days as an internist, titrating patients with digitalis and recognizing how not to poison them was a skill that internists learned. Endemic plant of the Balearic Islands which lives at rocky cliffs. It is very toxic but in small amounts it can be used to manage some heart conditions, you know: the dose makes the poison.

Foxglove (Digitalis) Number of views as of 8th July 2017 = 700. This year seems to be a good one for the common foxglove (Digitalis Purpurea) if my recent visit to Pembrokeshire in South West Wales is anything to go by. Here's one pictured at Whitesand Bay near St Davids (the smallest city in the UK). Date: 3rd June 2012.

At the bottom of the garden in a country cottage we find a brick and tile construction which at one time housed the one and only toilet. This would have been an earth closet. Now most, like the one here provide storage for garden tools. Can you imagine having to make a visit in wet or very cold weather? And a bit cobweb-y and spidery in there to say the least! This image was captured when the foxgloves were just finishing flowering - still very fertile soil round here after all this time!

I played with line, texture and negative painting to create this watercolour of white and pink foxgloves. The original work measures 11" x 15" and is painted on 300gsm Artistico extra white watercolour paper.

These pink, purple, and yellow/white foxgloves were hand painted by me with watercolor!
