I had been in the English Lakes for a few days, but alas I needed to leave. With no desire to rush, I spent an hour or so walking the paths around Ambleside before getting back into my car. The Lake District was first settled thousands of years ago, Ambleside was a Roman fort town, so the sight of old stone walls shouldn't surprise you. The wall in this image isn't that old, but it does speak to the pastoral beauty of the national park. Here, on the edge of the town is a wonderful wall running across a field with a lovely mature tree standing by its side. Peace and tranquillity reign supreme.

To walk in the Lake District National Park, in the UK, you will encounter the stiles that prevent the sheep that live on the mountains from wandering too far. They vary in style but they are stiles nevertheless. This one resides near Blea Tarn, a most picture-perfect place. As I recall, the British Standards Institute has a standard for stiles. It doesn't define what they must look like but only their functional purpose.

The view from Blea Moor Road (B6255) near the Ribblehead Viaduct. Here we look across the Yorkshire Dales towards Pen y Ghent late in the afternoon in early July. At 2277ft (694m) this is the smallest of the three peaks of the Dales , the other two being Whernside and Ingleborough. This image is of the delightful Blea Tarn in the Lake District National Park in the UK. Beyond the tarn are the Langdale Pikes, some of the most climbed peaks in the park. In case you're wondering why there's a fence projecting out into the lake, it's to stop the sheep from going around the end of the dry stone wall.

Wensleydale Yorkshire Dales National Park Wensleydale is the dale or upper valley of the River Ure on the east side of the Pennines, one of the Yorkshire Dales in North Yorkshire, England. This broken gate leading to the farmers fields is commonplace in the Yorkshire Dales as the sheep and cattle knock the walls down just for the fun of it and maybe as they like to see the farmer as he comes to repair them.
