Balnakiel Beach in epic winds in winter. Very hard to get any kind of shot, with very high winds, squalls of horizontal hail! We saw a complete nutter running out to Fariad Head with just a pair of shorts on!!

With the exception of Cape Wrath nearby, Faraid Head is about as far away from here in Romsey that I can get without having to leave the ground or take to the water. This picture comes from a trip in 2006, where I went to the far North of the Scottish mainland to stay at Durness and investigate Smoo Cave. The beach looked idyllic with its dunes, but the frequent showers reminded me why no-one goes North for a beach holiday. This painting comes from a photo I took on a trip to Durness (North coast of Scotland) back in 2006. A mile from the village lies 'Smoo' the largest sea cave in Britain. The main cavern is easily accessible at low tide,and when you turn around you get this amazing view of the gorge leading out to the sea. When the weather is right (which seems to be virtually never) you can take a tour deeper into the cave, first by boat past the waterfall that plunges into the cave, then on foot, and I understand by boat again further on. Up on the cliffs you can easily spot the river disappearing into a sinkhole that feeds the cave waterfall. Painted in oil on a 16x20 inch board.
