On the same day Parisian experimental composer Pierre Schaeffer (Dustin Hoffman) coins the biggest philosophical term of his career, he learns that his wife, R. Murray Schaefer (Meryl Streep), is leaving him and their young son, Paul Shaffer (Justin Henry). Forced to raise his son alone, Pierre loses his job but gains a stronger relationship with the child with the help of another single parent, Pierre Henry (Jane Alexander). When R. Murray returns to claim custody of Paul, the ensuing copyright battle takes a toll on everyone concerned.

When my children were small I was asked to build a play house in our back garden. I was involved in a considerable construction project at the time and had access to off-cuts of timber. The simple concept grew on size and complexity; windows with curtains, height so children could stand inside with ease. This "wendy house" was much loved and played with for years , but as the children grew into teens the once cherished house was neglected. One of my children asked me to get rid of it and try as I may it was too big to go round the side of the house and being solidly built in-situ was now a problem to dispose of. The only realistic solution was to burn it in the garden and photograph the event. Again nothing goes to plan. Heat generate...

Over the course of five decades, Brakhage created a large and diverse body of work, exploring a variety of formats, approaches and techniques that included handheld camerawork, painting directly onto celluloid, fast cutting, in-camera editing, scratching on film, collage film and the use of multiple exposures. Interested in mythology and inspired by music, poetry, and visual phenomena, Brakhage sought to reveal the universal, in particular exploring themes of birth, mortality, sexuality, and innocence. His films are for the most part silent.
