FIRE ISLAND PINES NEW YORK

My friend (I shall call him 'The Big Man') is a ferry enthusiast. I've drawn three key ferries from his life to celebrate the birth of his new baby girl (who'll probably go and watch ferries whether she likes it or not). There was the time he lived in a fishing village north of Aberdeen and he used to watch the Northlink ferries sail past his house. When he got married, he voluntarily dressed up as a sailor and we took the CalMac ferry to the Isle of Arran. More recently, we travelled to Australia (on a plane) and we used the ferries to cross Sydney Harbour.

Ferris Wheel

The waters of the Greek islands are amazingly clear allowing views deep into the waters. In shallows the sea bed can be seen with hints of life below. The calmness is stirred by the inter-island ferry services that are the life-blood of these islands. Prime viewing position at the stern of the Blue Star Ferry as it leaves Santorini bound for Nexus. No one image can fully capture the movement, colour variations of this brief phase on the sea crossing which changes once deep-water is encountered. The set of 8 shown forms a carefully crafted panel.

*Edgcumbe Belle* Number of views as of 10th November 2016 = 300. The Cremyll Ferry crosses the River Tamar between Admirals Hard in the Stonehouse district of Plymouth (Devon, England) and the village of Cremyll on the Rame Peninsula in Cornwall. There has been a ferry here for over 1000 years. The Edgcumbe Belle (built in 1957) does not normally work this route. Until recently, the regular boat was the Northern Belle, but she was withdrawn from service in December 2013 following an incident with a Royal Navy landing craft. Date: 13th April 2014. *Sea Tractor* Number of views as of 31st March 2019 = 2220. This unusual vehicle is used to allow passengers to embark / disembark the "South Sands Ferry":http://www.redbubble.com/people/redhilldigital/works/12053620-south-sands-ferry at low tide. The tractor reverses out into the water and the bow of the ferry boat docks with the rear of the vehicle allowing the passengers to get off the boat and onto the tractor and vice versa. South Sands is a small cove on the Kingsbridge Estuary, just south of Salcombe, South Devon, England. Date: 14th April 2014.

*Maid of the Islands* The Maid of the Islands, just about to leave Brownsea Island for Sandbanks. Brownsea is the largest of the islands in Poole Harbour, Dorset, England, the second largest natural harbour in the world. Date: 17th April 2017.

High Speed Cat Number of views as of 29th August 2018 = 620. One of three high-speed catamarans formerly operated on routes linking the English ports of Poole and Weymouth, the French port of St Malo and the Channel Island ports of St Peter Port (Guernsey) and St Helier (Jersey). This 'cat' and her sister ships were built by a Tasmanian company (Incat) and were registered in Nassau in the Bahamas. The vessels are 86 metres (282 feet) long, weigh 5000 tonnes, can carry 800 passengers and 200 vehicles, and have a maximum speed of 40 knots. Date: 23rd August 2014. *The Bramble Bush Bay* Number of views as of 19th June 2018 = 840. Otherwise known as the Sandbanks Chain Ferry. This car ferry operates across the entrance to Poole Harbour (Dorset, England) between Sandbanks and Shell Bay, cutting approximately 25 miles off a return journey between Bournemouth and Swanage. Operated by the Bournemouth-Swanage Motor Road and Ferry Company, this diesel-hydraulic powered vessel came into service in 1994, becoming the 4th ferry to operate the route since 1923. Propulsion is achieved by drive wheels pulling along the chains. Its maximum capacity is 48 cars and the occasional double decker bus. *South Sands Ferry* Number of views as of 8th May 2019 = 660. This small ferry plies its trade along the Kingsbridge Estuary between South Sands and the neighbouring town of Salcombe (South Devon, England). Due to the gently sloping beach at South Sands, at low tide passengers embark and disembark via a "Sea Tractor":http://www.redbubble.com/people/redhilldigital/works/12057706-sea-tractor.
