Forth Rail and a single line. The Forth Rail Bridge is one of the most recognisable man made structures in Scotland, possibly even the world. The oldest of the three bridges which cross the Firth of Forth in the west of Scotland. This iconic steel cantilever structure - a symbol of Scotland's engineering heritage - connects Fife on the north bank and West Lothian in the south - just west of Edinburgh. It was voted Scotland's greatest man-made structure in 2016 and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Construction started in 1882 and the bridge was opened by the Prince of Wales, the future King Edward VII, in 1890.

Currently there is a massive program to repaint the bridge, so it has been covered in scaffolding for the past few years. It is nearing completion and they say that the new paintjob will last for 20 years. The plastic sheeting is necessary as they need a sealed environment as they blast the old paint and rust of the steel and extract it immediately before it can fall into the river below.
