Gothic architecture reflects light through its stained-glass windows and the projection of the shadow of a raven interrupts the sublime light of what the Gothic style meant during the Middle Ages, however, the raven, a majestic bird as a symbol of death and the darkness would make his presence in the gardens a true gothic garden.

Lichfield cathedral interior

I didn't have a lot of time, but while visiting Wells, the smallest city in England, I did have a quick look around the wonderful Cathedral Church of St Andrew the Apostle. Once inside I was taken by the the remarkable Saint Andrew's Cross that sits within the criss-cross of an arch that separates the nave from the choir. I did read that the arch was an afterthought as during construction it was realised that there was some instability in the walls. As afterthoughts go, this provided a most graceful solution to the problem. As I read further, it seems that construction of the cathedral started in 1175 and continued into the 1400s, which makes me think that most of the people who toiled here to build this place never saw it complete.

Hexham Abbey is a place of Christian worship dedicated to St Andrew and located in the town of Hexham, Northumberland, in northeast England. Since the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1537, the Abbey has been the parish church of Hexham. As you walk up into the old city of Coimbra, you pass under this wonderful arch. It's curious that structures that were built centuries ago, and yet remain, must, I suppose, still be useful. In this instance, the utility must be in its undeniable charm. I hope you enjoy the image as much as I do.
