Visible for miles around and offering fine views of the English Channel and surrounding countryside, Hardy's monument was built in 1844 on Black Down, about 6 miles south west of Dorchester, not far from the village of Portesham, in Dorset, England. The 72 foot high monument is dedicated to Vice Admiral Sir Thomas Masterman Hardy, a commander at the Battle of Trafalgar, and not to novelist Thomas Hardy, who also has local connections.
