Description: Roman Empire - Gaius Plinius Secundus, called Pliny the Elder, was a Roman author, a naturalist and natural philosopher, a naval and army commander of the early Roman Empire, and a friend of emperor Vespasian. He wrote the encyclopedic Naturalis Historia, which became an editorial model for encyclopedias. Pliny the Elder died in AD 79 while attempting to rescue people from the eruption of Mount Vesuvius.
Description: Discovered in 1760, this is one of the most famous and beloved wall paintings of a high-society Pompeian woman. She is richly dressed with gold-threaded hair and large gold earrings, bringing the stylus to the mouth and holding the wax tablets.
Description: A wall painting from the Villa of Diomedes, an ancient Roman villa located outside the walls of Pompeii on the Via dei Sepolcri to Herculaneum. This drawing was done when the Villa was excavated between 1771 and 1774. The original has been poorly preserved.
