Early summer and the wildflowers and insects are beginning to feel the warmth of the sun. This image was taken in QEII Country Park, Ashington in Northumberland and shows a brightly coloured hoverfly against the blue of a cranesbill and the yellow of a buttercup

A flower fly or 'hover-fly' sits upon wild 'red campion' more pink rather than red, one of the only chances to photograph these fast flying flies is whilst they are 'tasting nectar' or gathering pollen... I took this shot because of the subject matter - but I really was interested in the contrast of pink colour with that of the background - a deep green!

Do you ever feel that when the lights are too bright that sometimes it all goes blurry..??? Why do we put ourselves under these really dumb dim thought out conditions... Poor office workers... that's all I can say! Many of us have been there... You only have to walk into an artificial environment such as a shop floor residence to feel the constant buzz... of fluorescent lighting..!!! Its awful..!!! Something flashing on and off at 50 hertz per second - its enough to make some go crazy...! 'Get grounded go outside' - and soak up some real sun! You only need to walk to some nearby ivy, and spend some time to look at the birds and the bees and get a few seconds of nature - to bring you back down to normality again... Just re...

Hoverflies on Valerian - It's early June and the wild Valerian (Valeriana officinalis) along the roadside verges here has come into flower. It is visited by a huge variety of insects, including butterflies, honeybees, wild bee species and hoverflies. I suspect these are female Eristalis arbustorum, a widespread European species of hoverfly. Hoverflies are often mistaken for bees. I took a lily from a bunch of flowers into the garden and look who else fell in love with it. The fact that it can be seen in most months of the year is no doubt in part due to it hibernating through the winter but emerging on warmer days. Records indicate that it may be the commonest and most widespread hoverfly in Britain.

Iridescence is a brilliant thing! Not only brilliant in colour but also by design... As often I do, I just happened to stumble upon this capture whilst on a wild local walk... I was drawn to the light falling upon this geranium and just noticed a hoverfly sucking upon its nectar... The beautiful brilliance and iridescence seemed to shine through its wings with ochres of red, blue and gold... Shooting in natural light - so as not to lose its colour I stopped down as much as I could so as to lose the background but not overly as to lose the light... The surroundings were dappled light so it didn't take much to lower and lose the surroundings and I tidied up in post to bring out the best in this image... I often wonder whether some insec...

Flower Fly by Debra Martz I was sitting outside at the campground taking a break from a day of bird watching when I started noticing some of the insects around me. Not sure the exact ID of this one; some type of Hover Fly I think which some of them are also known commonly called Flower Fly thus the title. Not something I've ever really noticed before until capturing one by accident on a cornflower a couple of years ago.
