It's a cold winter's morning at Hungerford Wharf on the Kennet and Avon Canal. There's ice floating on the surface of the water but at least it's bright and sunny! In the foreground is 'The Rose of Hungerford' a wide beam boat which takes visitors for trips along this lovely waterway. It was rebuilt in 1814 in the Regency Gothic style and was faced with Bath stone which was brought along the canal. A little later, in mid-Victorian times it was further renovated. The canal was constructed between 1794 and 1810 to link Bristol with London via Reading. Abandoned in the early 1900s, it was renovated and reopened in 1990.

Photographed on a cold winter's afternoon in December, the fine windmill at Wilton. It is situated on the North Wessex Downs in Wiltshire near its border with West Berkshire and is close to the towns of Marlborough and Hungerford. It dates from 1821 and was in continual use until the 1930s. Restored in 1976 it is now back to full working order producing stoneground flour which is sold locally.
