This bird with roses is based off the Gladzor Gospels. The Gladzor Gospel is an illuminated manuscript created in the 1300s in the Armenian region. The manuscript is a lovely piece of illumination and calligraphy with bright, vibrant colors. This bird design comes from a small section of the front cover depicting birds among a series of roses. I've recreated it as a hand-carved block print and printed it by hand before scanning it to make this design.

It is a book of hours: a collection of prayers to be said at the canonical hours. It was created for the extravagant royal bibliophile and patron John, Duke of Berry, by the Limbourg brothers.
