The Town Bridge, or as it is known locally, The Water Bridge, crossing the Kennet and Avon Canal in the centre of Newbury, Berkshire. The River Kennet was made navigable from Reading to Newbury in the early 1700s under the supervision of the engineer John Hore of Newbury, work commencing in 1718. It was extended further west to Hungerford in 1798. The bridge probably dates from this period. The canal was finally opened to connect with Bristol in 1810.

A pair of swans at Greenham Lock on the Kennet and Avon Canal near Newbury, Berkshire. This section of the canal - or navigation (combined river and canal) began its construction in 1718 under the supervision of engineer John Hore of Newbury and in 1724 the stretch between Reading and Newbury was opened. The entire canal joining the Avon Navigation from Bristol and the Kennet Navigation in Berkshire was completed in 1810 allowing goods to be transported smoothly from Bristol to London. A digital art image of The Thames Path at Reading Bridge connecting the town of Reading in Berkshire with Caversham on the north bank of the River Thames. Originally there was just one bridge, Caversham Bridge, just further upstream but as the main town absorbed the village of Caversham in the early 1900s, a new bridge was deemed necessary and this structure was finally opened in 1923.

Blakes Lock is the first (or last) lock on the River Kennet - eventually becoming the Kennet and Avon Canal. It's situated at Kennetside just before the river joins the Thames, This stretch has been navigable since medieval times and was was an important supply route to mighty Reading Abbey - the abbot being the river's controller. Although on the Kennet, the lock is managed as part of the Thames system of locks although this one is still manually operated.

The River Thames as it flows through the villager of Cookham on its way to London and the sea. The Thames Path is a long-distance trail which follows the river all the way from Cricklade in the Cotswold Hills to the Thames Barrier in Greenwich, London. Cookham, on the banks of the Thames is a village lying in the furthest north-east corner of Berkshire, England. Here the artist Sir Stanley Spencer lived and set many of his paintings. This lock, no.96, was originally built between 1718 and 1723, supervised by local engineer John Hore of Newbury. It was turf-sided but was rebuilt in brick in 1982-4. The canal was constructed between 1794 and 1810 to link the Thames and Avon rivers, providing a smooth transport link between Bristol and London via Reading and the Thames.

Just below the swing bridge carrying the road over the Kennet and Avon Canal at Sulhamstead in Berkshire, England. The surrounding buildings are reflected in the water and the whole scene is bathed in late afternoon sunlight. The Kennet and Avon Canal, 87 miles long, was constructed between 1794 and 1810 to link the Thames and Avon rivers, providing a smooth transport link between Bristol and London via Reading. The canal, once almost derelict, was restored in the late 1900s, being fully opened in 1990.

An artistic rendition from my original photograph of houses by the Kennet and Avon Canal in Newbury, Berkshire. The canal is approaching the town from the west, the scene being captured from its West Mills bank. This was oce the centre of the town's textile and agricultural industries with warehouses, workshops and mills lining the banks. From here the canal makes its way to Reading and the River Thames and eventually London from where woollen cloth could be exported throughout the world.

This was once a centre of the woollen cloth trade and next to the canal bank here are the old weavers' cottages. Further on, through the swing bridge at West Mills the waterway glides through the middle of the town to head eastwards to Reading and the River Thames. Looking upstream from the road bridge to Goring over the River Thames at Streatley. On the left are the newly refurbished buildings of the Swan Hotel. Its origins date from the C17th when it was apparently opened by the first owner, Francis Swan. In 1970 it was famously bought by Danny La Rue. The present owners have recently extensively refurbished it. The Thames path skirts the hotel before continuing along the river bank to Cleeve Lock and on to Wallingford.

Walking along Kennetside in Reading on a sunny day in early autumn. This is almost at the point where the River Kennet meets the Thames. In front is the bridge taking the railway line to London Waterloo over the river and in the background are the gantries of the Great Western line to Paddington which crosses the river a little further on. Just past the first bridge on the right is the site of the old Reading gasworks, the last gasholder being demolished in March 2022.

The Kennet and Avon Canal as it passes through Newbury in Berkshire. This scene, taken from the West Mills swing bridge shows the canal as it heads towards the centre of the town, about to pass through Town Lock. On the right bank is the site of West Mills - Newbury was once a busy agricultural and woollen textile manufacturing centre. The tower of St Nicolas church, restored during the early 1500s stands above the surrounding buildings.

Wallingford is an ancient and picturesque market town on the Thames between Reading and Oxford Here was one of the most important Royal castles in England. The first mention of a bridge was in 1141 when King Stephen beseiged the castle and Queen Matilda.The present bridge apparently has traces of the medieval structure.

A dinghy moored on the Oxford Canal at Thrupp near Kidlington in Oxfordshire, England. The Oxford Canal, 77 miles long, was constructed in the late 1700s and was opened in stages between 1774 and 1790. The aim was to connect Coventry and its nearby coalfields with Oxford, the Thames and eventually London. It's a contour canal meaning it follows the line of the hills rather than using flights of locks to climb them, resulting in fewer locks overall. Nikon D7100 Nikkor 18-200

A captivating image of the view over the River Thames from Ray Mill Island. On the right is the Boathouse Restaurant sitting beside Boulters Lock and which was once a watermill. Taplow and Maidenhead are joined by an elegant footbridge on Ray Mill Island. The lock itself was the subject of several paintings in the Victorian and Edwardian eras. My photograph has been finished as a coloured pencil drawing.

The Kennet and Avon Canal as it passes through the village of Pewsey in Wiltshire, England. This is the scene just above the bridge at Pewsey Wharf with narrow boats moored on the northern bank. This section of the canal was opened in 1810. The Kennet and Avon was designed to join Reading with Bristol and was constructed between 1794 and 1810. A digital painting of narrowboats moored just above Aldermaston lock in West Berkshire on the Kennet and Avon Canal. This canal was constructed to link two rivers - the Thames in the east and Avon in the west, enabling goods to be carried from Bristol to London via the Thames. It fell into disuse due to the Great Western Railway being built but was restored in the late 1900s and is now a busy leisure waterway.

Halfpenny Bridge at Lechlade in Gloucestershire, right at the southern tip of the Cotswolds. This bridge is the last road crossing over the River Thames before the river becomes un-navigable. Just further upstream through the arch it gradually becomes narrower and shallower - no place for river cruisers! This bridge dates from 1792 and its name stems from the toll paid by pedestrians to cross, this ending in 1839. Lechlade is a market town very close to the border with Oxfordshire.

Caversham Bridge which spans the River Thames joining Reading town and Caversham. The first bridge here was built c1163. During the Civil War a skirmish on the bridge resulted in the Reading side being rebuilt with a wooden drawbridge added. This was later painted on canvas by JMW Turner. The present stone and concrete bridge dates from 1926. To create this image my original photograph has been given an oil pastel finish.

The sky reflected in the River Thames as it flows past Pangbourne Meadows in Pangbourne, Berkshire separating it from Whitchurch in Oxfordshire. The riverside here is lined with moored river boats during the summer but now in November it's empty. This is the view downstream from the Whitchurch toll bridge with river heading towards Reading and eventually London and the sea. This spot is often filled with canoeists and kayakers from the nearby outdoor centre. Canon Powershot G12

This is as far you can take a river boat on the Thames. The scene is just above Lechlade and the boats moored in the distance cannot go further upstream for here it narrows and becomes shallower as it heads towards Cricklade. Just behind us is the roundhouse which marks the beginning of the now derelict Thames and Severn Canal which once allowed working narrow boats to travel further. In the distance is the spire of St Lawrence's church at Lechlade - a picturesque market town.

A residence sitting beside the River Thames at Caversham in Reading, There are several houses her along The Warren with river frontage and moorings. Here we are looking across from the Reading Promenade, part of the Thames Path National Trail. It's often busy with boats of all sorts here from large passenger carrying craft giving sightseeing trips to motor launches, narrowboats, racing boats and canoes. This is a digital pencil drawing from my original photograph.

A narrowboat negotiating the River Avon just upstream from its meeting with the Severn at Tewkwesbury, Gloucestershire. This has been produced as a digital painting using chalk effects. Just further upstream is the Severn-Avon lock which enables boats to join the main course of the Avon and continue up to Stratford-on-Avon. Tewkesbury grew up at this point as the meeting of the two rivers was strategically important for a town with a major abbey. Nikon D7100 Nikkor 18-200

The view from the bridge over the Kennet and Avon Canal at Kintbury in West Berkshire. The canal passes through the village by way of Kintbury Lock, taking us to Hungerford, Devizes, Bath and Bristol. This peaceful scene would once have been busy with canal boats taking goods, especially Bath stone, to Reading and London, together with agricultural goods and produce. This was the view in late October with the water vreflecting the golden foliage of the surrounding trees.
