River Avon, Evesham Number of views as of 1st May 2019 = 475. The historic, market town of Evesham (Worcestershire, England) lies on the River Avon and was founded in the 8th century around an abbey, one of the largest in the country at the time. This shot shows the Workman Bridge crossing the Avon, and is taken from Workman Gardens which adjoin the river. The church by the bridge is Evesham Methodist Church, which was opened in 1907. The River Avon runs from its source near Coventry, through the town of Stratford on Avon (known as the birthplace of William Shakespeare), and the Vale of Evesham, before joining the River Severn near Tewkesbury in Gloucestershire. A section of the Avon Aquaduct as it crosses the River Avon in Muiravonside Country Park, near Whitecross, Falkirk District, Scotland. The Avon Aquaduct runs through the middle of Muiravonside Country Park. Formerly an estate owned by the Stirling Family of Falkirk, this 170 acre park comprises woodlands, parkland and the River Avon. At 810 feet long, this aquaduct is the second longest in Britain and lifts the Union Canal 86 feet over the River Avon. The spectacular views from the top make the climb worthwhile. However, with the arrival of Brunel's Great Western Railway which runs next to the canal at this point, it gradually fell into disuse, many stretches becoming un-navigable. Canal boats - including cruisers and narrowboats moored along the banks of the Kennet and Avon Canal just above Aldermaston Lock in Berkshire. This is the view as seen from the towpath. Below the lock is Aldermaston Wharf which was once busy with working boats loading and unloading cargoes of stone, coal, agricultural goods and produce and groceries. Since restoration in the second half of the 1900s and the reopening of the waterway in 1990, most boats are now for leisure or are lived in.

On this large area of land is a Victorian boathouse, and here during the 1890s the Countess of Warwick kept a small menagerie comprising a baby elephant, some Japanese deer, a flock of Chinese geese, an emu, raccoons, and an antbear. When the elephant grew too large, it was given away to an animal trainer in Lymington, while the emu achieved fame when it chased a bishop through the castle grounds. Walking along the towpath of the Kennet and Avon Canal near the village of Sulhamstead in West Berkshire in early autumn. Here we approach Tyle Mill Lock from the upsteam side. This canal was constructed to link two rivers, the Thames in the east and Avon in the west, enabling goods to be carried from London to Bristol. It fell into disuse due to the Great Western Railway being built but was restored in the late 1900s and is now a busy leisure waterway.

A stretch of the River Kennet at Burghfield in Berkshire, England, ,as it winds its way towards Reading. This is a navigable stretch of the river which forms part of the Kennet and Avon Canal. Here it is quiet after flowing under the roaring traffic of the M4. A little further on it passes Burghfield Mill, a large Georgian building now converted to flats. Just to the left of the poicture is the Severn-Avon Lock allowing boats to pass from one river to the other. Further upriver can be seen King John's Bridge, a Grade 2 listed structure - and apparently if a boat can pass through this then it can manage all other bridges as far as Stratford Upon Avon! Narrow Boats In Lock, Stratford Upon Avon River Avon The Warwickshire River Avon is navigable over 47 miles, with 17 locks along its course, from Alveston weir above Stratford-upon-Avon, through Warwickshire, Worcestershire and Gloucestershire to where it joins the River Severn at Tewkesbury. The River Avon is an English river in the south west of the country. To distinguish it from a number of other rivers of the same name, this river is often also known as the Bristol Avon. The name ‘Avon’ is a cognate of the Welsh word afon, ‘river’ Stratford-upon-Avon, a medieval market town in England’s West Midlands, is the 16th-century birthplace of William Shakespeare. A narrowboat on the River Kennet moored just above the town lock at Newbury, West Berkshire. This is the West Mills area, so called because once there were corn mills here - the sluices for them are on the left of the image. The mills were owned by Hovis from 1921 until the 1950s. Further on and past the swing bridge, the Kennet Navigation as it is properly called, becomes the Kennet and Avon Canal, taking us all the way to Bristol.

Strolling along the towpath of the Kennet at West Mills Newbury in Berkshire. Here a wide boat rather than the more familiar narrow boat is moored just below the swing bridge. Peaceful now, this was once a hive of activity with corn mills using the river's water to turn their waterwheels. The Kennet Navigation, becoming the Kennet and Avon Canal above the bridge, would have been busy with boats loading and unloading everything from grain and flour to Bath stone for building.

Autumnal reflections in the waters of the Kennet and Avon Canal (Kennet Navigation) just above Midgham Lock in West Berkshire. Here a wide boat is moored next to the towpath. Follow the path and we reach Thatcham and Newbury before carrying on to Bath and Bristol. Behind us, below the lock, we reach Woolhampton and eventually Reading and the Thames.

It's early spring: the trees are just beginning to bud and the boats moored alonside the bank are getting ready for the summer. This section of the canal began its construction in 1718 under the supervision of engineer John Hore of Newbury and in 1724 the length between Reading and Newbury was opened. This section of the canal - or navigation (combined river and canal) began its construction in 1718 under the supervision of engineer John Hore of Newbury and in 1724 the section between Reading and Newbury was opened The remainder of the Kennet and Avon to join Bristol and Reading was built between 1794 and 1810.
