After the death of Sergeant Parry at Black Springs, the Hall Gang were wanted for murder. This reward notice was published in 1864 and signalled the beginning of the end for the bushrangers.

For months Frank Gardiner, The Darkie, had been plotting a big heist. He knew that the key to a big haul was to attack one of the gold escorts from the diggings but they would be heavily guarded so he would need to be able to overwhelm the security. So, as 1862 trundled along Gardiner built up a gang for his heist that could hardly be rivaled by any police escort. Among the men were Gardiner’s wingman Johnny Gilbert, Ben Hall, John O’Meally, Henry Manns, Alexander Fordyce, Daniel Charters, and John Bow . In that time Gardiner had been bouncing ideas around with Gilbert and O’Meally, finally devising a plan as winter set in.

In the 1860s there was one man who was the nemesis of the New South Wales bushrangers - Sir Frederick Pottinger. A gambler, a dandy and a baronet, Pottinger became one of the most renowned frontier lawmen in Australia facing off against the likes of Frank Gardiner, Johnny Gilbert and Ben Hall.

Sir Frederick Pottinger is a popular figure in bushranging history. A baronet who tried to hide his nobility by becoming a policeman, he earned the nickname "Blind Freddy" because he was so incapable of locating the bushrangers plaguing his district.

One of the Lachlan's most dangerous bushrangers, John O'Meally was a member of the gangs of Frank Gardiner, Johnny Gilbert and Ben Hall. O'Meally was short tempered and quick to violence, with at least one death to his name. He met his end during a gunfight at Goimbla.
