This was one of my first pictures from around Luskentyre - an idyllic view of the distant hills of Harris, with the cluster of cottages that make up the place, and the receding sea leaving behind a pristine beach. Taken from the spit of land near Seilebost, I returned to this spot last year to find that tide and wind has reshaped the foreground to the extent that I couldn't find the exact spot anymore. I've been meaning to do this one for a while now. It comes from my trips to the Outer Hebrides (Western Isles as they now like to be called). I was walking on South Harris, and stopped at a point on the long winding road that leads to Luskentyre (Losgantir), some three miles in the distance. The tide was half out, and it was a gentle light that day in late Spring. Luskentyre is perhaps my favourite of all the places I've been around the British Isles. This was the fantastic view I had at breakfast, staying at a guest house on the West coast of Harris in the Outer Hebrides. Voted one of the best beaches in the world, this is one of a series of my oil paintings of the area. The cloud draped over the mountains hugging the contours soon dissipated to leave an unusually hot sunny day in this paradise. A few years back this place inspired me to write a poem... I gaze into her eyes and see a far off place, where the ocean blue turns turquoise on the shore. A river snakes to meet the tide, swirling earthly hues across the waves. A white shell sand lifts effortless on the breeze, drifting over dune to rest - on machair. There are daisies, buttercups, vetch and clover, but the orc...
