My second time up Mueller hut because it's one of my favourite places in the world. I've yet to manage to paint Mt Cook Aoraki from the Hooker Valley on a clear day but this view from Sealy Tarn was a pretty good view of the beauty!

At the far end of the Hooker Valley, below Aoraki/Mt Cook in the South Island of New Zealand is the Hooker Glacier and Lake. This was close to the far end of our walk in brilliant sunny weather. We did scramble along the lateral moraine next to the lake to get more interesting photos later on. This valley contains the most spectacular scenery I have ever seen. This picture shows a nice brown horse grazing in a meadow with Mount Cook (Aoraki, New Zealand) in the background. I painted this landscape with oil paints on 26-02-2018. The size of the original painting is 35 x 50 cm.

Having the moon in position added something to this photo of Mt Sefton which is behind The Hermitage at Aoraki/Mt Cook in the South Island of New Zealand. Red Tarns is a quick steep walk from Mt Cook/Aoraki Village and to be honest... in the weather we had coming in, it was a big puddle with some red plants in it! The real gem came when I spotted a trail heading even higher over the ridge line. The view over the back to the Tasman River valley is hands down one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen. This was painted at home after our trip because at the time we were being chased off the hill by a rain storm!

My second accidental Christmas in New Zealand was celebrated in and around Mt Cook village. We started things off with a quick visit to Tasman Glacier view point. Considering I thought it would just be a flat braided river with a bit of snow in the distance I was totally blown away by the view! This is painted hiding under a rock for shade while having good chats with a DOC worker.

If you're ever in Mt Cook/Aoraki Village, get up to Mueller Hut! It's the most dramatic out of this world location that I've hiked to yet. If you sit still long enough in the summer you'll catch bits of the ice shelf falling.

Combined images - the Milky Way Galaxy is a stitch of six overlapping photos. This was then resized and replaced the sky of Aoraki/Mt Cook. The latter was darkened to make it look like night. This memorial commemorates more than 100 climbers who have died in the New Zealand Aoraki/Mt Cook area in the past. It is a fitting reminder of the dangers of mountain climbing. This is one of many photos taken on our truly amazing 6 hour walk up the Hooker Valley from the Mt Cook centre to Hooker Lake and Glacier. That walk was for me about the most spectacular scenery that I have ever seen, outranking that of what I saw in Canada. The memorial is close to the start of the walk.
