Otautahi Christchurch, the second-biggest city in New Zealand. The gateway for all that the glorious Te Waipounamu/South Island has to offer. A vibrant city, rebuilding after the devastating earthquakes of 2010/11.

Armed with a sketchbook and pens, I recently challenged myself to complete the 3000km Tour Aotearoa, sketching all 30 of the official photo checkpoints. I drew in rain, wind and bbq-hot temperatures, always aware that I had to keep riding on before it got dark! I'm super happy with the results and hope you enjoy them too. In late June 2021 the snow hadn't quite arrived yet so I made it around the Kepler. Hiking and painting in winter is a challenge when you have to make it to the next hut with reduced daylight. This was a sketch, later painted at home. The colours are little more playful than usual but it captures the deep greens and blues of Fiordland.

Large Kiwi print designed with koru. The koru (Māori for loop) is a spiral shape based on the shape of a new unfurling silver fern frond and symbolizing new life, growth, strength and peace. It is an integral symbol in Māori art, carving and tattoos. I drew this for a mural a few years ago, thanks to society6 it is getting a new lease on life. I also have this design with a black kiwi on a white background in my redbubble gallery.

Tiki Head Design

As we drove north along the west coast towards Hokitika and Arthur's Pass, we passed a sign for the Lake Mapourika camping area. I decided to quickly pull in and see what the lake was like. Boy was I glad I did that, since the water was completely still with an absolutely perfect reflection, with only the occasional ripple breaking the unending calm.
