After a year of it being top of my list I finally made it through Valley of the Trolls and up to Lake Wilson. What an adventure!

This is the New Zealand fantail bird. In Maori its name is piwakawaka. Known for its friendly ‘cheet cheet’ call and energetic flying antics, the fantail is one of the most common and widely distributed native birds on the New Zealand mainland.

On a recent trip to Zealandia nature reserve in Wellington, New Zealand, this native Tui landed on a branch next to me. I was lucky enough to capture a photo. At Christmas I received some acrylics. I immediately knew what my first painting would be.

Glenorchy Painting

The great king kiwi likes to hold his head high. Bonus: he wears a cute fancy green cape.

In late June 2021 the snow hadn't quite arrived yet so I made it around the Kepler. Hiking and painting in winter is a challenge when you have to make it to the next hut with reduced daylight. This was a sketch, later painted at home. The colours are little more playful than usual but it captures the deep greens and blues of Fiordland.

My second time hiking up to Brow Peak. This time the weather was terrible until we turned back along the ridge towards Big Hill Saddle. The skies cleared and I was totally gobsmacked by Otago's rolling tussock!

An impromptu photography walk around Arrowtown found me walking Sawpit Gully. The Autumn colours are incredible!

My last hike in NZ (for now) saw us camping up and above the Rob Roy Glacier viewpoint and topping out on a nearby ridge. It all got a bit interesting as the tarns had dried up, meaning we had no water for the majority! This was painted upon return because we were too busy being dehydrated!

Liverpool Hut has been on my tramping list for a while but I've also been intimidated by the sharp steep uphill at the end. I thought I'd be dangling off a cliff! Luckily it was actually pretty safe and I had a great time!

This was the view for my first two weeks in Queenstown. Absolutely majestic in the evenings!

Reaquanting myself with Queenstown I marched up Ben Lomond on a cloudless day. The last third of the hike is super steep and hot! Worth it for the views though.

After two months of being injured I finally made it up a hill! This was an overnighter to Luxmore Hut on the DOC maintained Kepler Track Great Walk. I can't wait to do the rest of it.

I took a day trip out on my bike and aimed to get to Ben's Cove. Turns out places on maps are actually really far away and I only made it as far as Seven Mile Point bike park. Still a great day out though!
