The late '80s were saw skateboarding hitting its second stride, and crazy skater designs like 'Ramp Ratz' were everywhere. Goofy as this graphic is, if you had a local ramp or park that you frequented, the scene is probably rather familiar, as those places could get pretty crazy with kids flying everywhere pretty much all day long.

Variflex Skateboards was started by the Losi brothers in 1977 but spent years struggling with an identity crisis as one brother pushed to produce pro-quality boards while the other pushed for mass-market products for sporting goods and toy stores. The mass-market direction seemed to be winning as you could find their boards just about everywhere in the early '80s and to their credit, they were much better than the competition in this space. The Off Ramp Cafe was a dive situated in an odd no-man's land corner of downtown Seattle. it was trapped between a concrete off-ramp from southbound Interstate 5 and the tangled intersections of Eastlake Avenue, Stewart Street, and John Street, and wedged below a massive wall of the Denny Way bridge over I-5. Finding the rather small 300 person capacity joint was a challenge and parking was near impossible, but those factors didn't prevent the venue from being a destination for bar patrons and indie music lovers alike. The venue was at the heart of the grunge explosion in the ’90s that changed Seattle and music forever

The 1970s were the heyday of bicycle culture for boys, and nothing was cooler than a muscle bike with a banana seat, sissy bar, and ape hanger handlebars. We rode our bikes with reckless abandon, popping wheelies and leaving skid marks on the pavement. Bike stunts were the norm, and we pushed each other to be more daring, more fearless. We formed neighborhood bike gangs, daring each other to perform the most outrageous tricks and races. And let's not forget about the no-helmet rule - safety was not a priority back then. It was a time of daredevils and risk-taking, of BMX and Stingray bikes. Bike accessories were all the rage, from playing cards in the spokes to cool reflectors and streamers. Good times!
