I wanted to catch first light this morning but luckily the cloud cover gave me some extra time to get up to location for this very popular landscape vista... Snowdon is very lush in summer which reminds me of Hawaii although I have never been as yet... :-)

Took this using full frame technology and a medium focal length 70's vintage lens. Looking in post production, I knew that I'd prefer this image in black and white, in bold monochrome, to create the dramatic look of the often foreboding Snowdon Massif... where such weather formations, often catch people out...

Light was fading fast, not due to the failing light but due to the heavy cloud cover and squall bringing in fresh snow... so I had to work fast. Set up tripod at the top of Dinorwig on the tourist lookout overlooking the whole of the Llanberis pass... I used full frame Sony A7 which is known for its punchy colours and an old classic lens ~ the SMC PENTAX-M 40mm, f/2.8 Pancake Lens. Quite a nice combination - compact and with the focus peaking, maximum sharpness from a classic lens. Think I stopped down one or two stops for the sweet spot of this lens, so f/4.0 or f/5.6 and adjusted the exposure for the clouds... It was the contrast in the clouds, that I was after... On a day like today from such a perspective - this really is Snowdonia Paradise...

I saw this forming from a distance and thought that it would make a good capture and decided to accentuate the depiction and physical process towards better visual elaboration... As I understand it, when gases turn into liquid due to the suppression of temperature, condensation occurs, known as the "dew point". This cooling forms clouds and 'further lowering of temperature' creates snow clouds, heavily laden with potential new snow, which occurs at the freezing point... This image could have easily been called 'freezing point' ~ but I think that this is not the occurrence which I have captured... Both occurrences can be treacherous one for climbers on the mountain, as temperature suppression brings in occlusion obscuring access or...

Exactly what it says on the tin..! I wanted to capture a sense of survival on the summit of Snowdon for those that attempt it at the height of winter when snow clouds abound and can very quickly encompass and entrap those ~ that can be ill prepared... "Snowdon can be more dangerous than Mount Everest because it is the peak of choice for ill-equipped tourists treating it like a gentle hillside stroll" ~ for which it is not... It is a serious mountain and is not to be taken likely especially in Wintertime.
