My continuing series of great surf spots on the USA west coast. Trestles, part of the San Clemente State Beach, is split into five different sections. Lower Trestles, one of the most popular spots, is better-known due to the number of high-profile competitions and contests held there, but all sections are excellent for surfing. Trestles is hailed as one of the best beaches to surf because of the continuous swells, rocky reef and cobblestoned ocean bottom provided by the local watershed, San Mateo Creek, as well as the overall geography along the West Coast. A series of point breaks named for the railroad bridge over San Mateo Creek, Trestles proves that when it comes to waves, size isn’t everything. To get here you have to hike from the San Onofre State Beach parking lot, and you’ll be glad you did. The waves are some of the most gorgeous you’ll find anywhere—world-class waves that some have claimed are the mainland’s best. Newbies should stay on shore and learn by observing the advanced surfers, who are typically found at Lower Trestles, or look for more gentle stretches along the state beach closer to Upper Trestles.

This is another of my continuing series of great places to surf on the west coast. SWAMI'S is a fantastic surf spot in Encinitas California. Swami's, also known as "Swamis", is an internationally known surfing spot, a point break located in Encinitas, California. Swami's was named after Swami Paramahansa Yogananda, because the grounds and hermitage of the Self-Realization Fellowship ashram, built in 1937, overlook this reef point. Access to Swami's is primarily by way of a small but well-appointed cliff top park, which has bathrooms, a water fountain, benches, picnic tables and a lawn under shade trees, as well as a small parking lot. Great places to surf around the world.Queensland's Gold Coast is one of the most intense surf zones in the world, combining 40K's (25mi) of legendary spots with a huge, hungry surf population. It's the most visited stretch of coastline in Australia, but don't be misled by the name 'Surfer's Paradise', as the heart of this zone is dominated by skyscrapers not palm trees and the mass-tourism hordes rule out anything approaching deserted. However year round warm temperatures, a raging nightlife and endlessly long, right point breaks tempt southerners and foreigners alike, to try their luck in Australia's most competitive line-ups.

Great places to surf around the world.Uluwatu’s potential for incredible surfing first caught the attention of global audiences with the release of the Australian environmental surf documentary “Morning of the Earth” in 1971. This film helped to establish and encourage the natural relationship between the surfing community and ecological values. This deep appreciation comes from not only enjoying nature’s beauty, but participating in it or even “becoming one” with Mother Nature by catching that perfect wave.

Measuring just fifty yards wide in some points, this fragile island was proclaimed America’s first National Seashore Park in the mid sixties. The jetties at the lighthouse were built just a few years later and are largely responsible for creating the icon’s resilient sandbars and reeling left-hander. Quickly gaining notoriety for its top level surf, the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse began hosting ESA’s in 1971 and even hosted the US Surfing Championships in 1974 as well as in 1978 and 1982.
