Linking Newcastle upon Tyne and Gateshead, the Tyne Bridge is the most celebrated and most iconic of the seven bridges crossing the River Tyne. The Tyne Bridge was designed by the engineering firm Mott, Hay and Anderson and was built by Dorman Long and Co. of Middlesbrough who later went on to build Sydney Harbour Bridge, which opened three years later in 1932. At the time of its construction the Tyne Bridge was the world's longest single span bridge and was officially opened on 10 October 1928 by King George V.

The High Level Bridge is a road and rail bridge spanning the River Tyne at Newcastle upon Tyne. Using 5050 tons of iron, the bridge was completed in June 1849. This image shows the arches over the pedestrian walkway at the side of the bridge with a group of people walking towards the Gateshead side of the bridge. One of the oldest bridges spanning the River Tyne, the High Level Bridge was completed in 1849. It was designed by Robert Stephenson in the early days of the railways to provide a rail link to Scotland. the bridge is still in use and provides an interesting walk for pedestrians heading towards the Castle and Cathedral of Newcastle upon Tyne that can both be seen in the right of the picture. There are many well known bridges on the River Tyne around Newcastle upon Tyne. There are four of those bridges in this picture. The famous Tyne Bridge, beneath this, the High Level Bridge, then the blue Metro Bridge and finally the red Swing Bridge which was opened in 1876. The quayside in Newcastle upon Tyne provides visitors a pleasant walk alongside the river to view these bridges.

The bridges over the River Tyne in Newcastle upon Tyne are more well known than any other attraction in Newcastle city., The Tyne Bridge in particular is a recognised symbol of Tyneside. Now a Grade II listed building the steel structure was officially opened in 1928. In this view you can also see Newcastle Quayside, a popular place for tourists to take stroll along the river.
