Above me rumble trains, loud, otherworldly. In this netherworld, covered by its canopy of ochre metal, I look up, at a patch of sky, at the lines of tower blocks. I love being in America, far away, invisible and unknown. I want to explore all day long, to savour the smells and sights and sounds, familiar through film. I love the texture of the trains, corrugated, they cut through the air, through buildings. This work is rich in colour, it is vibrant and energetic. A wonderful souvenir of Chicago.

The bridge drew me, a jolt of pure Americana, of Art Deco and Jazz Age. The trains trundle overhead, cutting through buildings, reminding me of a metropolis fantasy cityscape. The metal is riveted, solid, nostalgic too, with fascinating hues of orange, purple, brown, a metallic autumn. I am in Chicago and a day of freedom and exploring awaits, a day of indulgence. I look upwards, beyond the tracks of the Loop, at the skyscrapers and the parcel of sky. The work is filled with energy, with detail and colour. A perfect addition to any collection of American art, a great gift, a wonderful souvenir of the Windy City.

A walk in West Hull, to Coltman Street, near Hessle Road. The houses are fascinating here, beautiful models of Victoriana, town houses filled with history, stories of fishing, of wars and social revolution. Seagulls call to each other, according to Saxon and Norse legend the voices of the dead. There is a scent of brine, of cooking, of lilac and cut grass. It is quite today, a gentle pulse of city life. I enjoy this walk through the west of Hull, crossing from the Humber up towards the city's Avenues area. This corner of the street boasts a terrace of painted houses that I enjoy.

House In Tangiers, Morocco

Shadows and shade, a magical place where Edinburgh stone, rigid, and classical, blends into a sylvain world of hidden garden, of moss and coolth. The crescent is one of several that formed an outer fringe of territory in childhood, close to my grandmother’s flat. To the side, an enchanted private garden cascades down to the valley, whilst similar streets branch off. A place of delicious serenity, of Grecian columns and huge windows, drawing rooms with pianos and basement flats. This work is a wonderful souvenir of Edinburgh, the Athens of the North, and a great addition to any collection.

What could be lovelier than afternoon tea in an English tea garden, with roses blooming and the gentle heat of summer radiating from the orange brick walls? A freshly brewed pot of tea, bone china cups, delicate like the petals of roses, and a delicious scone, buttery, warm and served with clotted cream. A bee hums, spoons clink porcelaine and already the day seems to grow languide. It is solid and comforting, timeless and graceful, especially when such pleasures are coupled with friendship, the nectar of plum jam and darjeeling to the account of harmless gossip. This work is rich in shadow and light, rich in realism and reflecting a lovely view of an idealised England.

The German House of Spells and Magic

On a French island, in the height of summer, I walk along deserted streets. Shutters closed against the heat, against the light that bleaches colour and penetrates the interior. The village is almost silent, as noon approaches. Crickets, bees, the faint keys of a piano. The scent of oregano, thyme, rose and jasmine I love the colour and the texture of the walls, creamy lemon, with shutters of faded blue. Little balconies of wrought iron, overhanging flowers. Paradis indeed.

A huge pan of food is bubbling and sizzling, a cauldron of spice and heat, heady scents of curry, turmeric, ginger, garlic, and an enveloping cloud of charcoal and steam. It is time to eat. Plates are empty, extended, waiting. Two women, emerging from the darkness, fix the viewer with their strong looks, bewitching perhaps.

On a wet, dark night, I walked around Brussels. A place of memories, of times long ago when I was a child in Luxembourg, and Brussels was the nearest large city. Memories of Art Deco train stations, grey in the drizzle, of the intoxicating smells of syrup waffles, fresh, crispy chips and ground coffee. As I walked that night, I came to the gates of the Central Station. At this hour, it was almost empty, the light visible through the high windows, creating a sense of mystery and contrast. The work is a great souvenir of the city, a perfect gift. I decided to create a painting using a very restricted set of colours. Texture has been added to create extra depth.

San Francisco, Colourful Houses

A quiet moment, a little time spent in meditation, wrapped in the woolen prayer shawl, his finger entwined on the long tassel. He mumbles the words, said over millenia, binding himself to the divine. Around him the room appears to vanish, Hebrew words, for this I used collage, swirl on the walls. This work is rich in detail, realism and in emotion. It expresses eternity, solitude and devotion. It is peaceful and evocative.

The Lord Line, Hull, is an artwork by artist Andrew Reid Wildman. He uses a distinctive realist style and tends to depict the architecture of his birthplace in vivid colour. This building sits at the entrance to Hull's former fishing docks. It is a building very much at risk of possible demolition and irreparable neglect.

This work depicts a hotel near the station in the French city of Lille. Has the building seen better days perhaps? The light fluctuates, and shadows beckon us downwards. The work is a wonderful souvenir of Lille and full of French flavours.

This terrace of Victorian houses caught my eye, a long terrace, that seemed to stretch towards the horizon and which was basking in a glorious, celestial light. It was an area of Hull I did not know well, and I was exploring on my last evening there. Everything seemed to turn to gold, the air scented with lilac and the evocative fragrance of hot food. I set out to capture the pattern of light on the red brick.

Yellow Wall With Hebrew

A wonderful day spent in a communal kitchen, in a place alive with vibrant colour and enticing smells, a place surrounded by friendship and warmth and community. We cooked all morning, amidst huge cauldrons of bubbling curry, with scents of coriander, ginger, and turmeric, the magical fragrance of baking and of flatbreads thrown onto the griddle. I wanted to capture the colour of the clothes, the vivid orange and yellow. It is a small work, full of life and character. A wonderful gift, a perfect addition to a collection.
