In 1967, Nigerian playwright, novelist, and poet Wole Soyinka was imprisoned for his attempts to stop the civil war. He spent two years in solitary confinement, where he secretly kept writing poetry and politically engaged articles. Soyinka has had an extraordinary life as an artist and political activist, a playwright, and a university professor.
