The 20th Field Artillery Regiment is a field artillery regiment of the United States Army constituted 1 July 1916 in the Regular Army. It served in France during the First World War with the 5th Division, at St. Mihiel and Lorraine before inactivation on 5 September 1921 at Camp Bragg, North Carolina. The regiment's distinctive unit insignia was originally approved for the 20th Field Artillery on March 28, 1933. The first week of February 1958 found the 46th FA Group believed of all its attachments.and transferred to Fort Sill, Oklahoma, with one officer and 42 enlisted men. Shortly afterwards the Group was redesignated as the 46th Field Artillery Group (Redstone) On 24 June 1958 the 46th Artillery Group was again reorganized, the 2d Missile Battalion's Headquarters and Headquarters Battery was disbanded and the firing batteries, A and B, were assigned to the 46th Artillery Group. 9 July 1958, Headquarters USAA&MC, Fort Sill issued GO #72 which once more redesignated the Group

The majority of the 2nd Armored Divisio was based at Fort Hood Texas. The division remained on active service during the Cold War. Its primary mission was to prepare to conduct heavy armored combat against Warsaw Pact forces in defense of NATO. The division formed a key component of the U.S. military's plan to move 'ten divisions in ten days" to Europe in the event of a Soviet threat to NATO. The division practiced this task numerous times during Exercise Reforger from 1967 to 1988. In 1975, the 2nd Armored Division's third brigade forward deployed to West Germany and was assigned to NATO's Northern Army Group (NORTHAG). The brigade received additional aviation, engineer, military intelligence, medical, and logistics support units and was reflagged as the 2nd Armored Division (Forward). The unit's primary mission in case of conflict with the Warsaw Pact was to either secure airfields and staging areas for the deployment of III Corps from the United States, or to deploy directly to the Inter-German Border (IGB) and establish a blocking position as part of a NATO combat force.

n August 1961, a few days after the Berlin Wall was erected, a reinforced company from the 7th Infantry Regiment in full battle gear, was ordered to travel along the Autobahn from Aschaffenburg in Bavaria to West Berlin. This was to assert the right of US forces to travel unhindered from West Germany across the western part of East Germany to West Berlin. After the Berlin Wall was built, it was not known if the East German forces would attempt to impede or restrict the movement of US troops when crossing East Germany while trying to reach West Berlin.
