The Mourning Cloak (also known as the Camberwell Beauty in Britain) is a large beautiful butterfly, with deep plum-purple wings, decorated with blue spots and cream-colored edges. In Maine, where I grew up, these elegant butterflies are very special to see. Not only are they rare, but seeing one is a delightful sign of spring, because they show up very early in the season. They are such a dark purple color that they usually appear almost black.
