Following a stormy afternoon, the clouds part to give spectacular evening light over the Solway Firth. This image was captured on a June evening on the coastline between Maryport and Allonby in Cumbria. Over the water lie the coast and hills of Galloway in Scotland. Unsurprisingly this area of coastline was designated an Area Of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) as early as 1964.

Derwentwater, or Derwent Water, is one of the principal bodies of water in the Lake District National Park in north west England. It lies wholly within the Borough of Allerdale, in the county of Cumbria. The lake occupies part of Borrowdale and lies immediately south of the town of Keswick. Glenridding (meaning “glen overgrown with bracken”) is a small, mainly tourist village at the southern end of Ullswater, near the foot of Kirkstone Pass. With the lead mining industry gone, the area is now mainly for the tourists who come to view one of the most beautiful areas in the Lakes. The area is popular with walkers with many walks to suit all levels from the easy to the more demanding. One reason a lot of walkers come here is to do the classic Helvellyn walk along Striding Edge. This is a walk not for the fainted hearted with Helvellyn reaching a height of 3,116ft [950m].

Whinlatter Pass, Cumbria, England Whinlatter Pass is a mountain pass at an elevation of 337m (1,105ft) above the sea level located in Cumbria, England. Where is Whinlatter? Set high in the Whinlatter Forest Park, within the Thornthwaite Forest, the pass is located in the northern Lake District of Cumbria. It’s the northernmost road pass in the district. How long is Whinlatter Pass? The narrow road to the summit is paved and perilously steep snaking up. It’s called B5292. The pass is 9.81km (6.1 miles) long, running west-east from High Lorton to the south of Cockermouth to Braithwaite, to the west of Keswick. This image, originally captured on film in the autumn of 1987, depicts the Ashness Bridge, in the Lake District National Park, in England. This is a popular spot for capturing images, but it has changed over the years as the view across to Skiddaw and Derwentwater, the mountain and lake in the distance, is now restricted by the abundance of trees that have grown. This image, therefore, represents a historical view. The bridge is a traditional Lakeland bridge, in that the arch does not contain a keystone. Within the park, there are many 'pack horse' bridges such as this, mostly built during the late 17th and early 18th centuries. The fact that they still stand after 300 or more years is a testament to their construction.

This lovely lake is surrounded by stunning mountain scenery to its south, softening to the gentle hills of the north. The lake is the second largest in England at seven and a half miles long, but is less than a mile across. It is also the third deepest English lake at 250 feet deep.

Keswick, Cumbria, UK Keswick is an English market town and a civil parish in the Allerdale borough of Cumbria, England. Historically it was in Cumberland, and since 1974 has been in Cumbria. It lies within the Lake District National Park, Keswick is just north of Derwentwater and is four miles (six kilometres) from Bassenthwaite Lake. It had a population of 5,243 at the 2011 census. Derwentwater is one of the main bodies of water within the Lake District National Park. It is approximately 3 miles long and 1 mile wide with a maximum depth of about 72 feet. The shore at Keswick is extremely popular with tourists who can hire rowing boats or take a less arduous trip on a launch. There are many walks around the lake and on the surrounding fells.

River Kent, Kendal, Cumbria, UK The River Kent is a short river in the county of Cumbria in England. It originates in hills surrounding Kentmere, and flows for around 20 miles (32 km) into the north of Morecambe Bay. The upper reaches and the western bank of the estuary are located within the boundaries of the Lake District National Park. The river flows in a generally north to south direction, passing through Kentmere, Staveley, Burneside, Kendal and Sedgwick. Near Sedgwick, the river passes through a rock gorge which produces a number of low waterfalls. This section is popular with kayakers as it offers high quality whitewater for several days after rain.
