Blue-winged Teal South Texas ©Debra Martz The male Blue-winged Teal is easily identifiable with its bold white crescent in front of the eye and a good-sized black bill. The powdery blue shoulder patch is visible in flight along with green secondaries of the wing. They breed in much of the northern USA and Canada migrating as far south as South America. But many are perfectly fine to stop in south Texas for the winter. Autumn Color and Reflections Moraine State Park of Pennsylvania by Debra Martz I spotted this beautiful scene along the North Shore Drive and forturnately there was a pullout close by allowing me the opportunity to stop for some photographs. Lake Arthur is within the state park and this was a small inlet of water by the main drive. Red-Tailed Pennant by Debra Martz I was out doing some bird watching which is slow in Port Aransas, Texas in June. Charlottetown Memorial Fountain PEACE Debra Martz I like how one lone leaf had fallen and landed just below PEACE so I kept the autumn color of it. The Prince Edward Island Service Memorial Fountain in Charlottetown is Canada's first memorial of its kind, honoring individuals in the armed forces, law enforcement, peacekeeping organizations, or firefighting services who risked their lives in the line of duty. Black Skimmer @Debra Martz I was standing on the end of a boardwalk that extends into the Laguna Madre watching a Reddish Egret when this Skimmer appeared. It made several circles in the area before moving on a little north. The strange, uneven bill of the skimmer has a purpose: the bird flies low, with the long lower mandible plowing the water, snapping the bill shut when it contacts a fish. Spring Point Ledge Light by Debra Martz Built in 1897, Spring Point Ledge Lighthouse stands out at the mouth of the harbor like a giant spark plug. Nature's Tapestry by Debra Martz Along the Riverwalk Trail in Zion National Park, one will find several areas where the lower canyon walls weep. They weep from dripping springs which in turn create gardens on the walls. After a heavy rain or during spring runoff, the canyon walls may be streaming with falling water. Some of Zion's waterfalls are spectacular but mostly ephemeral; some last only minutes. Yet their tracks remain visible. Due to desert minerals, the falls leave black streaks where the water evaporates. Those mineral "tapestries" can be seen in many areas of the park. Copyright Debra Martz 20180823-DSC_4387.N

After seeing it so many times before arriving at the Acropolis, I knew I had to get a photograph of it alone against the sky. The bright yellow foliage caught my attention and then this tree called out my name! It said, "Debra, don't stand way out there looking, come closer by my trunk and take a look up toward the sky!" So glad I listened to this beautiful, majestic tree!

Cowboy Capital - Bandera - Texas by Debra Martz One cannot walk nor roam around Bandera, Texas without noticing the western feel of the town. From horse art to boots to western murals, you'll find it here. You will, also, see a sign on the edge of town "Welcome to Bandera, Texas, Est.1853, Cowboy Capital of the World" and taking a stroll around the courthouse you will find the Monument honoring the Cowboy Champions of Bandera County. Well Worn Pilings Portland Maine by Debra Martz The pilings, originating from piers of the past, remain intact in a collective heap at the cruise terminal in Portland, Maine, even after the passage of many years. I found them interesting in their weathered and worn state, and even more so when a single cormorant landed on one. Amazing to me was its "matching colors" of silver, black, and orange. Black Crested Titmouse Little Beauty ©Debra Martz It's sweet how timing works. I hadn't made it 100 yards at the start of the trail when the mosquitoes attacked. So it was back to the truck for insect repellent wipes. This little one was perched on the side view mirror but as I got closer it flew into the tree close by, turned and watched me from there. I saw a few more on the trail throughout the day but not this close.
