Eye scanning

Lens cells lack a nuclei, and the main constituent of the cells is the protein crystallin. Tightly packed layers of lens fibres (as seen here) are referred to as laminae. The lens fibres are linked together via gap junctions (one seen here) and interdigitations of the cells. The transparency of the lens is thought to arise from the regular arrangement of these cells. The iris, the coloured part of the eye, and the retina, the black of the eye, have unique features in every individual. If an image of a person's eye is held on computer they can be identified by an eye scan. Other parts of the body used for biometric scanning include fingerprints and the contours of the face.
