Heart muscle fibres. Coloured diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) scan of a mouse heart showing the myofibres (muscle fibres). Different colours correspond to different orientations of fibre. Myofibres on the inside and outside of the heart chambers spiral in different directions. When the fibres contract this configuration creates an upward twisting motion that expels blood from the heart. DTI is a non-destructive technique. Most of the pancreas is made of cells like this, which produce large quantities of digestive enzymes in a secretion called zymogen. Blood vessels (red, purple) radiate out from the optic disc (yellow). The optic disc is the area where the optic nerve and blood vessels enter the eye. The cast was made by injecting resin into the blood vessels, followed by chemical digestion of the surrounding tissues.
