Edinburgh - towards the Forth Bridges

A view from the Firth of Forth of the three bridges linking Fife on the north bank and Lothian on the south. In the foreground is the new Queensferry Crossing taking the M90 over the estuary. This bridge, opened in August 2017 is the longest 3 pier cable-stayed bridge in the world - 1.7 miles long! Behind it is the Road Bridge opened in September 1964 and in the background the unmistakable cantilever structure of the Forth Rail Bridge which was opened in 1890 - now a World Heritage Site!

The small town of North Queensferry, Fife, Scotland and the Forth Bridge, also known as the Forth Rail Bridge. Shot from the walkway at the North end of the adjacent Forth Road Bridge. This unique steel Cantilever Bridge with three diamond-shaped towers crosses the river Forth at South Queensferry, Scotland. The bridge was designed by Sir John Fowler and Benjamin Baker. The bridge was built by Sir William Arrol. Constructed started in 1883. The bridge was opened in 1890 at a cost of £2.5m and 57 fatalities among the construction crew (it is now believed that the actual death toll is likely to have been closer to 80). The bridge is still in use today, carrying the railways to the north from Edinburgh.

The Road Bridge was opened in 1964 and it has so many problems that a new bridge crossing will be built just to the west of the present Road Bridge. Forth Rail and a single line. The Forth Rail Bridge is one of the most recognisable man made structures in Scotland, possibly even the world. It has been a permanent fixture over the Firth of Forth for over 120 years and is still in use. This single line piece has been in the pipeline for quite a while. The scale and detail required proved difficult and can be seen in the lesser quality of some of the lines. However, it encapsulates the spirit of the Single Line collection. Showing the complexity in objects and structures that on the outside might seem simple. The design you see is the 23rd attempt to get it right. It was a glorious day today (2 April 09), so Sylvia and I went for a very pleasant walk in the country. We started off at the village of Ratho, Edinburgh, Scotland and walked along the Union Canal. On the way we passed a number of old bridges including this fine example. This 31.5 mile contour canal travels from The Falkirk Wheel to Edinburgh. Popular features of this gentle lock-free waterway include the Avon, Almond and Slateford Aqueducts, which are among the finest in Britain.
