Great White Pelican, Pelecanus onocrotalus, also known as the Eastern White Pelican is a bird in the pelican family. It breeds from southeastern Europe through Asia & in Africa in swamps and shallow lakes. Canon 450D, Canon100-400mm lens (Featured in Images of Endearment, & Others.)

This is my watercolor of a brown pelican at sunset along the coast. I was inspired to paint this pelican from watching them during my vacation trips in Florida.

It is April and it is breeding season. Most birds change colors in plumage during this season or get additional features. The American White Pelicans grow a plate on the top of their massive bills and the colors of the bill become much more vibrant. They are a migratory bird that mainly breeds in the north and into Canada but some have become residents of the Great Salt Plains Lake in northern Oklahoma so I get to see them in all their phases. ©Debra Martz, All Rights Reserved In My Gallery/Collection: "Feathered Friends2" 2021-04-08-DSC_2793

American White Pelican Fishing Alone by Debra Martz I had been watching the Pelicans at the spillway for over 45 minutes with some fishing together and others alone like this one. The morning light plays an important part of the colors of the water. Only 18 minutes earlier the water was all solid gold during the golden hour; now only parts of the ripples are still reflecting that gold. It was a cool autumn morning at the Great Salt Plains State Park and steam was rising off the warmer waters on the spillway. Early Morning American White Pelicans in Black and White by Debra Martz I love fall migration in northern Oklahoma. The American White Pelicans, Cormorants, Seagulls of several varieties arrive in large numbers as a resting area for a few weeks as they fish the waters of the lake, river and at the spillway.
