Jormungand from Norse mythology is a snake (the Midgard Serpent) that lives in the oceans of Earth and is so large that he encircles the entire planet. Son of giants Loki and Angrboda, he is the brother to both Fenrir and Hel. Upon Ragnarok, Thor and Jormungand are destined to kill one another.

For this design, I combined the symbolic meaning of galdr magic and fire sacrifice as symbols of Loki and Sigyn. This beautiful design is suitable for pagan folk, especially Lokeans. Jörmungand (pronounced YOUR-man-gand), or Jörmungandr in Old Norse is the "Midgard (Earth) Serpent". He is a tremendous snake whose body is so long that it stretches around the Earth completely! Jörmungandr lurks beneath the waters of Midgard where Norse hero Thor is in constant pursuit of this slippery beast. The poetic Eddas of Norse mythology describe a variety of encounters between Thor and Jörmungandr with Jörmungandr always narrowly escaping Thor's wrath. Finally, in the events of Ragnarok, Thor and Jörmungandr have their final battle! Thor finally kills the phantom creature! WORLD SERPENT

WILY JÖTUNN AND HIS KIDS-FENRIR, JORMUNGANDR AHD HEL.

Yggdrasil, or “World Tree,” is a central feature of Norse mythology. The World Tree houses all nine of the mythological Norse realms, and several mythological creatures occupy its branches. My artwork here shows Thor, the thunder god, battling his nemesis the “World Serpent” Jörmungandr. Thor and the world serpent do battle in the cataclysmic Ragnarök where they kill each other in their final battle.

There the serpent grew so large that it was able to surround the Earth and grasp its own tail. When it releases its tail, Ragnarok (the final battle of the world) will begin. Thor's archenemy. During Ragnarok, Thor and Jormungandr will fight each other to the death.
