Long exposure of wild sea waves on the shore of Snaefellsnes peninsula.

The sea crashes onto the rocks of the island of Hamnøya in the village of Reine. This was sunrise on my second-to-last morning in the islands, and it was by far the most memorable day of our trip. For two hours, the sun sat just above the horizon to the south and lit up the entire fjord in pink.

I couldn't believe that on my first night in Iceland, I was able to see the northern lights. I also couldn't believe that I happened to wake up at 3am and catch one of the few moments of clear skies -- I had 15 minutes before the whole sky was shrouded in clouds again. A short walk downhill followed by bounding from rock to rock along the edge of a stream brought us to this view. Killen Falls wasn't running quite as strongly as it had just after the heavy rains, but it was still quite impressive...but I think the cascades pouring off the wall around the pool at the bottom of the falls might have stolen the show!

Explore abandoned buildings. Only take photos, don't leave anything but footprints. I have this logo on a high vis jacket and workman's helmet. I never get stopped :)

This isn't your standard lighthouse light, but hey, I think I prefer it to a simple white flashing beam! Captured at the old lighthouse at Gardur on the Reykjanes penunsula of Iceland.

Morning in Nusfjord -- the lapping of the waves against the rocks, the cawing of seagulls, the absence of vehicles and busloads of visitors. It's a wonderful place to wake up and start the day. The sky lights up in pink over the massive Goðafoss waterfall in northern Iceland. I couldn't have asked for a better 18hrs here -- a sunset, northern lights all night, and then blue skies the next day!

Standing just above Ravadas Falls in Lemmenjoki National Park, the largest national park in Finland. This waterfall was stunning from all angles, and in the hour I had before the boat came back for the return trip down the Lemmenjoki River, I had to rush around like mad to get as many different compositions as I could! I also used my new Lee Filters Big Stopper for this shot, and I'm pretty happy with the results.

Olstind Mountain aglow in the pink of a January sunrise in the Arctic. The sun hardly got over the horizon, but for the two hours that it sat there, it turned everything an otherworldly pink colour. It really was a sight to see.

The rocky stream leading out of Ravadas Falls, one of the most popular attractions in Lemmenjoki National Park, Finland's largest national park.

Ravadas Falls crashes downhill in its rush to get to the Lemmenjoki River beyond. This is an easy day trip, despite the fact that it's located 19km into Lemmenjoki National Park; boats run twice daily so you can either go and walk around the falls for an hour or have a full day to hike 15-20km through some of the best scenery the park has to offer.

The first time I saw the northern lights, they appeared as a dim green line across the sky. The second time I saw the northern lights, in Inari, Finland, they danced across the entire northern sky. It was amazing...and a slightly better view than the naked Finnish men in front of the sauna nearby! Two years ago on St Patrick's Day, we were in for an absolute treat. A coronal mass ejection happened on the sun a few days prior, which meant massive auroras when it hit the Earth's atmosphere. I'm so glad that I booked in on a last-minute trip that took us to this hill in Kätkävaara, far out in the Finnish wilderness. There was no light pollution so we got to watch the amazing show until the guide forced us all back into the van!
