A textured image of the scene just above Halfpenny Bridge in Lechlade-on-Thames in Gloucestershire close to the Oxfordshire border. This picturesque market town, at the southernmost tip of the Cotswolds, is also the highest navigable point on the Thames. Further west and it becomes increasingly narrower and shallower. St John's Lock just down river from here is the first (or last if you're travelling westward) on the Thames. In the background is the spire of St Lawrence church - a local landmark.

The view from Windsor Town Bridge which links Eton with Windsor in Berkshire, England, looking downstream towards the weir and lock. River transport was always important here particularly with the royal palace at Windsor. There has been a bridge on this site since at least the C12th when records show tolls of the equivalent of £4.33 being paid to a landowner, Osbert de Bray, for boats passing beneath the bridge. Carleton Place - Ontario - Canada

A narrow boat moored next to the Severn-Avon lock at Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire. This is a branch of the River Avon just above the point at which it joins the River Severn to eventually flow into the Bristol Channel. Once through the lock the Avon continues upstream to Shakespeare's Stratford. Tewkesbry is an ancient market town dominated by the Norman tower of the Abbey. It was near here at the Battle of Tewkesbury in 1471 that The Yorkists defeated Lancastrians - Edward IV becoming king. Nikon D7100 Nikkor 18-200

A footpath winding through the Thames side meadows at Eton leading to Windsor in Berkshire, Across the Thames is the town dominated by its Castle - the out of town residence of the Royal Family. Built in the C11th as an outer London fortification, by William I, it was Henry i (1068-1135) who started to use it as a residence. Since then all English - and subsequently British monarchs - have chosen to live there and it is the present Queen's residence of choice near London. Nikon D7100 Nikkor 18-200

A branch of the River Avon as it flows through the town of Tewkesbury in Gloucestershire. The town stands at the point where the Avon meets the River Severn - a very strategic position in ancient times! It has a distincly medieval feel with many buildings dating from that time. In the background is Tewkesbury Abbey with one of the tallest Norman towers in existence. The Battle of Tewkesbury (1471) in the Wars of the Roses was decisive with the House of York triumphant under Edward IV. Nikon D7100 Nikkor 18-200

A view over the River Thames to the town of Abingdon in Oxfordshire. The spire of St Helen's Church dominates the scene - a well known landmark to users of the Thames. It inspired the artist JMW Turner who featured ii in a painting called 'Abingdon'. This ancient town is now in Oxfordshire although until relatively recently it was in Berkshire and was at one time the county town. This image was captured on a sunny winter's day. Textures applied in post processing to simulate a coloured pencil drawing.

Boats moored on the River Thames at Henley in Oxfordshire. Beyond the moorings is the bridge over the river taking road traffic towards Maidenhead in Berkshire. The bridge, dating from 1786, is a Grade 1 listed historical structure. On the opposite (Remenham) bank is the imposing building which houses the world famed Leander Rowing Club. Founded in 1818 it is one of the oldest rowing clubs in the world - and is in fact the oldest non-academic one! Nikon D7100 Nikkor 18-200

Oars propped up and ready on a landing stage at Henley-on-Thames in Oxfordshire. This could be called the 'home of rowing' as it is here each july that the world-famous Henley Royal Regatta takes place. This image was captured as preparations for the event were in progress. The races are run between Temple Island and a finishiung line just downstream of Henley Bridge - a distance of 1 mile 550 yards. Begun in 1839, the Regatta achieved its 'Royal' status when Albert became patron, Nikon D7100 Nikkor 18-200

The road bridge at Henley on Thames which carries the A4130 from Henley in Oxfordshire over the river to Remenham in Berkshire. Built to replace an earlier wooden structure, this bridge was designed by the architect William Hayward in 1781 and was completed in 1784, the builder being John Townesend of Oxford. On the left here is the landing stage of the Leander Rowing Club reminding us that Henley is most famous for the Royal Regatta held every July (in normal times!). The bridge is a Grade 1 listed structure.

The River Exe at Tiverton Mid Devon on a glorious Summer day. The Church of St Peter is a prominent landmark in the town.

Standing on the banks of the River Thames at Eton and looking across to the town of Windsor with its historic royal castle dominating the skyline. There has been a castle here since the time of William I and it started its life as a royal residence in the early 1100s uder Henry 1. The river has always played an important part in Windsor's life, having been the main route to London until roads eventually improved. An impressionist's view of the scene looking across the River Thames at Wallingford in Oxfordshire. Wallingford is a picturesque market town between Reading and Oxford with the river flowing along its northern side, In medieval times it was extremely important as it was thge site of a major royal castle. It was also only the second town in England to receive a Royal Charter from Henry II in 1155.

The River Deben in Suffolk at low tide seen from the footpath along itys bank. The lolw tide has revealed the mudflats which are a haven for wildlife such as a variety of waders prodding the silt for food. Further on is the harbour at Woodbridge on the tidal stretch of the River Deben just before it flows into the North Sea at Felixtowe. The town was once known for its shipbuilding and rope making - and it is said that some of Sir Francis Drake's warships were built here.

An impressionistic view of the approach to Woodbridge in Suffolk along the footpath beside the River Deben. Woodbridge lies about 9 miles from the Suffolk coast on the tidal stretch of the river - used to power the tide mill on the quay.. The town was once known for shipbuilding, rope-making and sail-making - and apparently some of Drake's warships were built here. The Deben flows from here to Felixtowe where it meets the sea. This stretch is a haven for wildlife being a Special Protection Area.

The tower itself sits on an artificial mound or 'motte', the original being built by Henry II in c1170. The present tower is a remodelling under George IV in the 1820s. The castle has always been a Royal residence, a retreat from the centre of London. Below it the River Thames has always been a highway to and from London, at one time the main route.

Behind the Riverside pub and restaurant can be seen the spire of the parish church of St Lawrence - a local landmark. The Thames Path starts close by, near to the town of Cricklade and continues all the way to the Thames Barrier in London.
