To get this view took a lot of energy. I had to trudge through deep snow carrying skis to gain the extra 160 m altitude from the top of the Saddle Chairlift to the Trig Point at the top of Treble Cone, near Wanaka, New Zealand. The mountains in the South Island of New Zealand are amongst the most spectacular in the world. But sometimes it takes a bit of effort to get the best photos. I had to gain about 100m extra height from the top of the Saddle Basin chairlift at Treble Cone (1960m) to photograph the opposite side. It was well worth the 25 minutes it took in deep snow and carrying skis! Taken on 21August 2010 and I used a Canon EOS 550D ISO200 f/18 1/320 sec fl=29mm and the panorama is from 4 overlapping images with camera in vertical mode. The brilliant hues of gorse light up an otherwise monochrome day at Erewhon Station in Canterbury. The hill in the middle of the valley is also known as Edoras, the village that the Rohirrim evacuate from to Helm's Deep in the second Lord of the Rings movie.

Mount Cook with its namesake lily blooming in front of it. These lilies only bloom in November and December, and when they do, the whole valley seems to be dotted with white and gold.

All I can think of when I see this photo is how cold my feet were when I took it! I decided not to inundate my boots, so instead waded into the glacial Matukituki River barefoot. The pins and needles had me dancing on the bank for minutes afterward!

The Hooker Valley track was absolutely worth the walk. This was one of the first epic lookouts we reached, just before the first swing bridge. Around every corner there seemed to be yet another amazing view!

Sunrise lighting up everything around Lake Wanaka -- the clouds, the mountains of Mount Aspiring National Park, and the lake itself -- in a gorgeous pastel pink colour. It only lasted for a few minutes, but it was worth the early wakeup call (as well as standing knee-deep in freezing water to get the shot)!

As we drove north along the west coast towards Hokitika and Arthur's Pass, we passed a sign for the Lake Mapourika camping area. I decided to quickly pull in and see what the lake was like. Boy was I glad I did that, since the water was completely still with an absolutely perfect reflection, with only the occasional ripple breaking the unending calm.

The Hooker River was definitely in a rush to get as far away as possible from Mount Cook, which stands imposing at the end of the Hooker Valley. For the first half of the Hooker Valley Track, Mount Cook was hidden behind the mountain to the right, but it finally came into view here and stood tall over us for the rest of our walk.

A rainbow appears over lupins blooming on Lake Tekapo's shore. A great way to end a bit of a rainy day.

It's unbelievable how blue Lake Pukaki is from afar...but once you actually stand in the lake, as I was doing here, it's so clear it seems that you can see for miles underwater.

The gorgeous view of the Remarkables as we cross the Kawarau River in Queenstown. What a perfect day to arrive there!

The Hooker Valley Track is one of the best half-day walks in New Zealand. Not only is it an easy, relatively even walk on a gravel path, but you get amazing views of the Southern Alps for your entire trip -- and that view constantly changes, sometimes including glacial lakes, other times including rushing river rapids, and most times including Mount Cook/Aoraki, the tallest mountain in New Zealand. The usual brilliant blue of Lake Tekapo briefly turns pink as the sunset lights up the heavy clouds.

Sunrise on Boxing Day lit up the entirely of Lake Wanaka in pink. Definitely worth the early wakeup call on a public holiday!

One of the things I love most about New Zealand is how quickly the landscape can change. While Mackenzie country is full of golden tussock, the mountains themselves are all rock and snow. In Lindis Pass, which traverses the mountains on the road between Tekapo and Wanaka, the tussock carpeted everything all the way to the peaks of the mountains. It made the whole area feel a bit desolate, yet starkly beautiful at the same time.

The insanely blue waters of Lake Tekapo and the mountains beyond. The lake gets its colour from suspended 'rock flour' ground up by the Godley Glacier that feeds the lake. This also happened to be the view we had out the bedroom window in our holiday house in Tekapo (although it should be noted that this was taken with a telephoto to avoid the houses on the other side of the road from us).
