Description: Born in 1886 in Macksburg, Iowa, “The Flying Dude” was Glenn L. Martin’s nickname shortly after his pioneering flight in 1909. Martin continued to build aircraft and test them, and by 1911, he was considered a leader of powered flight. Martin formally founded the Glenn L. Martin Company in 1917 and began producing aircraft for the defense of the US and allies, especially during World War II and the Cold War. During the '50s and '60s, the Martin Company moved from the aircraft industry into the guided missile, space exploration, and space utilization industries. In 1961, the Martin Company merged with American-Marietta Corporation, a large industrial conglomerate, forming Martin Marietta Corporation.
Description: While lifeguards have been around since the first Hawaiian hotel opened in 1901, ushering in the modern era of tourism, it was the Territory of Hawaii Act 201 that officially established a "Life-Saving Patrol" for Waikiki Beach that officially created the Ocean Safety Division of Oahu. Act 201 called for assignment to Waikiki Beach of two members not less than 18 and not older than 40 years of age, who were "selected for their strength and ability as swimmers and boatmen, and shall be expert in the use of the methods of resuscitation." Description: The No Name Restaurant was founded by Nick Contos in 1917 as a seafood stand meant to serve the fisherman who worked along Boston’s Fish Pier. He never named the restaurant, and while the space evolved and grew over the years, a proper name was never bestowed upon the business, hence how it became simply known as the 'No Name' for more than a century before suddenly closing up shop in 2019.

Description: Zündapp (a.k.a. Zuendapp) was a major German motorcycle manufacturer founded in 1917 in Nuremberg by Fritz Neumeyer, together with the Friedrich Krupp AG and the machine tool manufacturer Thiel under the name "Zünder- und Apparatebau G.m.b.H." as a producer of detonators (Zünder- und Apparatebau is German for Igniter and Apparatus). In 1919, as the demand for weapons parts declined after World War I, Neumeyer became the sole proprietor of the company, and two years later he diversified into the construction of motorcycles. Advertisements of the day proclaimed that their motorcycles were "Motorrades fur jedermann," motorcycles for everyone, and they were right on the money as by 1938, Zündapp had produced more than 200,000 motorcycles.
