Bobwhite Quail Tapestries

A bobwhite quail is flushed to flying across the field.

This is my mixed media (watercolor and acrylic) painting of a northern bobwhite quail whistling a call across the field. These birds are known for their recognizable “bob-white” or “bob-bob-white” call they make. It is also known as the Virginia quail. This painting was a winning selection as the “Northern bobwhite” in the special Fan Art Pack of bird cards as part of the 2023 Wingspan Fan Art Challenge.

This is my watercolor and ink painting of some bobwhite quail that are gathering back up together in a covey after being separated. The quail are trying to survive the deep and cold snow of winter. Bobwhite quail roost in the form of a circle. The main reason is to conserve body heat and to provide a 360-degree surveillance of predators.

This is my painting of an Irish Setter who is setting some birds. This was my dog named Casey Duke.

I spent many weekends as a boy on a farm near Hume, Missouri, with my Grandparents. Lots of activities were around barns. Weather we were getting corn for the hogs, putting up hay, cleaning fish, or doctoring the cattle, we beat a good path to and from the barns. Grain was stored in the Butler bin on the left. We’d draw water out of the pump in front of the barn. If you look closely along the gravel road leading to the barn, you’ll see some quail. Quail were often heard and seen around the farm. I got the inspiration to create this painting from my times spent here and in remembrance of my Granddad and Grandma.
