This is "Diet et mon droit" and also "The Empire on which the sun never sets."

A black and white image of British Railways standard class 9F railway engine 92134, photographed light engine (without a train) on a rainy day on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. The 9F was designed for use on fast, heavy freight trains over long distances. It was one of the most powerful steam locomotive types ever constructed in Great Britain.

A black and white image of Hall class locomotive 6990 Witherslack Hall on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway near Gothland, home of the TV series Heartbeat. Witherslack Hall was built by British Railways to a GWR design in 1948 and withdrawn in 1966.

A black and white image of Modified Hall Class 4-6-0 No. 7903 Foremarke Hall, built in March 1949 and withdrawn from British Rail service in 1964. Although this engine could be considered a GWR engine, it was built after nationalisation, hence was always a BR engine. Photographed here on a sunny autumn day on the Gloucestershire and Warwickshire Steam Railway.

A black and white image of 5428 LMS Class 5 or "Black Five" as the class is lovingly called. 5428 is a steam locomotive built in 1937 for the London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS). In 1967 it was withdrawn from British Rail service, preserved and named Eric Treacy after the former Bishop of Wakefield, an eminent railway photographer. The Black Fives were a mixed traffic locomotive, a "do-anything go-anywhere" type, designed by William Stanier and several members of the class survived to the last day of steam on British Railways in 1968, with eighteen of the type making it into preservation. 5428 is photographed here on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway near Goathland.

A black and white image of Southern Railways locomotive 34027 "Taw Valley" depicted pulling the boat train from London Waterloo to Southampton Ocean Terminal. The headboard indicates that the liner at Southampton Docks will be one of Holland American's fleet of liners. The photograph was taken at Arley Station on the Severn Valley Railway.

A black and white image of BR Standard Class 7 number 70013 Oliver Cromwell running as the "Red Dragon". The Red Dragon was an express passenger train between London Paddington and Swansea in Wales. The 720 indicates this is the "Up" train, IE the return to London. The BR Standard Class 7, otherwise known as the Britannia Class, is a class of 4-6-2 Pacific steam locomotive designed for mixed traffic duties.

Both engines are working hard on the wet track, on this atmospheric rainy day.

The British Shorthair is the pedigree version of the popular short-haired housecat. They're known for their stocky body and broad faces. Legend has it that the British Shorthair was the inspiration for John Tenniel's illustration of the Cheshire Cat in Alice in Wonderland. The Cat Fanciers' Association description for the British Shorthair even says "When gracelessness is observed, the British Shorthair is duly embarrassed, quickly recovering with a 'Cheshire cat smile'."

A black and white image of Flying Scotsman on the Cathedrals Express rail tour from Bristol on 23rd May 2017. Flying Scotsman is the most famous locomotive in the world and this tour had crowds on every bridge waiting for a glimpse of this Icon. This photograph was taken at Severn Tunnel Junction.

A black and White image of 46100 Royal Scot photographed on the Severn Valley Railway at Highley Station in October 2015. The engine driver is offering the single track working token to the Signalman who is just out of shot. Without the relevant token the train can't proceed along the single track sections. Royal Scot was built in 1927 by London Midland & Scottish Railway for the express service from London to Birmingham, Manchester through to Glasgow. She was chosen to appear on behalf of Britain at the 1933 'Century of Progress' exhibition in the USA and toured the USA and Canada covering 11 194 miles.

A black and white image of LNER B1 Class 4-6-0 no 61306 Mayflower, built for the London & North Eastern Railway and is one of only two surviving B1 Class locomotives. In 2015 Mayflower started operating on the British main line for the first time in over twenty years. She carries the early British Railways apple green livery as originally delivered in 1948. Photographed here on the main Line near Lydney in Gloucestershire pulling the Cathedrals Express special from London Paddington to Cardiff on St David's Day 2015.
