Amidst the boom of thunder and the crack of lightning, a gigantic bird of prey streaks from dark storm clouds. Towering Sunflower by Debra Martz While spending a week in La Veta, Colorado in late September, I passed this sunflower a number of times. I had never seen a sunflower taller than the roofline of a house! Finally, drove intentionally there to stop for a photo. Looking inside the huge wooden barrel of the 16th century (12.000 lt capacity) in Varlaam monastery, Meteora, Trikala, Thessaly, Greece.

The monastery that you see nestled in the rocks (a 4-storey building, looking so small in front of the majestic rocks), is Saint Nicholas Anapafsas, one of the 6 still active monasteries (once upon a time they were 24) in Meteora (Trikala, Thessaly, Greece) This one was established around the 14th century. The monastic complex of Meteora is a World Heritage Site by Unesco.

A story of no resistance and acceptance

This is one of the "face towers" that adorn the Bayon temple in Angkor Thom. The huge faces, 216 of them, at the various sites in Angkor Thom are often grouped in fours around towers. Each of the faces is very similar to any other, Scholars are unsure of who they might represent, a bodhisattva, Brahma, or maybe King Jayavarman VII, who was responsible for the construction of Angkor Thom. All that aside, when capturing the image I was really drawn to the power of these faces as they adorn the towers. The faces seemed so peaceful with closed eyes and gentle smiles.
