The residents of Tarpon Springs, Florida, USA (descendants of Halki sponge divers who were forced to relocate when the sponge diving around Halki became unprofitable) endowed Halki with money for the stone clock tower. On the Greek Island of Halki (Chalki), water has to be brought in by tanker, but somehow, wonderful flowers can be found all over the village. The only way around the village of Nimborio, the only settlement on Halki, is by negotiating the alleyways. There are a great number of abandoned houses in the village, these are slowly being rebuilt and turned into tourist appartments and villas. Chorio, the old capital of the island of Halki (Chalki), with 4,000 inhabitants in its heyday, was gradually abandoned and is now quite deserted and mostly in ruins, although it was once the only settlement on Halki. Chorio is built around the hill upon which the remains of the fortress stands (the Kastro, the castle of the medieval Knights of St John), and has some interesting old style stone houses. The town was built in a position concealed from view from the sea, and high above the initial maraudings of pirates. On August 14th, the population ascends to Chorio for the Festival of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, when the beautiful Church of the Virgin Mary (Panagia) is opened, and the church hall is full, with feasting and dancing. The church has a number of beautiful frescoes that make it a major tourist attraction.
