Eight beetles morphing into Hurdy-gurdies.

The hurdy-gurdy is generally thought to have originated from fiddles in either Europe or the Middle East. The hurdy-gurdy is a stringed instrument that produces sound by a hand crank-turned, rosined wheel rubbing against the strings. The wheel functions much like a violin bow, and single notes played on the instrument sound similar to those of a violin. These instruments can be decorative and I have added my own decoration to this lute backed instrument.

A red hurdy gurdy drawn in fineliner and then edited in 3D Paint. The design is based on a traditional lute back instrument and the insect designs are added for effect with the cockshafer beetle near the crank. This instrument creates a buzzing sound when played and the insects are added to reflect that idea.

I took this idea from one of my sketchbooks based on birds on a roof with a Hurdy-Gurdy.

The hurdy-gurdy or viella a roue (wheeled violin) is a stringed instrument where the strings are vibrated by means of a wheel coated in rosin which is turned using a handle. The melody strings are stopped by pressing keys which are attached to pegs whilst unstopped drone strings provide continuous single notes. It is often found in medieval art and these days is a popular folk instrument throughout Europe particularly France where it is sometimes played alongside bagpipes. Nikon D7000 Nikkor 18-200
